The Missa brevis in C Major, for 4 vocal parts and organ, was long considered one of young Mozart's excercises in The Italian style of church music. Karl Pfannhauser, after his studies of Leopold Mozart's masses, was the first to discover that the C-major fragment had been incorporated into the latter's Missa solemnis in C Major. As Mozart was only 8 years old at the time his father wrote this mass, he cannot be deemed the composer of the fragmentary C-major mass that is listed as KV 115. The mass contains only the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, the last of which breaks off in bar 9. For the present edition our aim was to draw upon Leopold's own works for the missing parts. With the Missa Sancti Nicolai and the Missa Sancti Joannis de Deo, his last to missae breves, Haydn also achieved masterworks in this category, and during his lifetime they numbered among his most popular works. This so called Little Organ Solo Mass has never been accused of being unsuitable for church use despite the text stratification in the Gloria and Credo. Inspite of the unusual brevity of the Gloria (31 bars), the text setting still shows musical differentation. The strength of the composition lies in its expressive ability to force the listener under its spell with magic power. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. During the summer of 1774 Mozart wrote two Masses within a few weeks: the Missa brevis in F major, K. 192, and the Missa brevis in D major, K. 194. A feature common to both compositions as well as to the Dixit et Magnificat K. 193, written at about the same time, and the Trinitias Mass K. 167 of the previous year, is a more or less strongly evident tendency towards contrapuntal writing. However, while the Dixit et Magnificat and the Trinitas Mass approach the late-baroque style, in these two brevis Masses Mozart sought to combine traditional polyphonic techniques with a more modern musical language. Telemann's Missa brevis on Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr is one of his eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motet-like composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment.
