The content of this volume consists partly of works that have survived in the composer's manuscript and are now published for the first time, and partly of the original versions of pieces that were published during Liszt's lifetime but later reworked. Of the earlier versions connected with Years of Pilgrimage, 2nd Year, Italy, the most noteworthy are the two completed versions of the Dante sonata, which are now appearing in print for the first time. Further important compositions belonging to the Italy cycle are the Petrarch sonnets. The first versions of these that we are publishing were actually published by the composer, and he also included them in his concert repertoire.Another particularly significant piece being published for the first time is the Freischütz fantasia, a characteristic, fine example of the type of opera fantasia Liszt developed at the beginning of the 1840s. Of the waltzes that feature in this volume, in addition to the first version of the concert pieces - the Grande valse di bravura and the Valse mélancolique - we have also included three complete, technically less demanding little pieces that Liszt intended primarily as mementos.

In his own distinctive style, Robert van Beringen has composed a very unique fantasy on three themes by the famous Baroque composers Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friedrich Händel. Van Beringen used Bach’s chorale Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht (‘Break forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light’) from his Christmas Oratorio and the recitative Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel, God with Us from Händel’s Messiah. A perfect way to say Merry Christmas in music!

Welcome to Ireland, the country where the traditional music is as varied as the landscape! Marc Jeanbourquinâ??s Irish Fantasy starts in a carefree and lively fashion from County Galway, then strolls through the moorlands of Kerry in a slower, lyrical movement with room for a solo, and comes to rest in Cork, with high-spirited and up-tempo folk tunes, and an accompaniment reminiscent of the bagpipes. A bold and powerful work for young bands! The aggressive theme sets the stage for this forceful original piece. In the spirit of The Planets by Holst, Titan-Moon of Saturn celebrates the multi-national Cassini-Huygens spacecraft that landed on Saturn’s moon, Titan, on January 14, 2005. There are many questions about Titan that this daring space exploration mission will seek to answer some of them. In addition to being a great piece for your own band, it is the perfect expression for a massed band performance. This is also a wonderful opportunity for some cross-curricular work with the science department.Mighty!
