Two challenging pieces composed by Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) one of the greatest organists in the late nineteenth century.

Felix-Alexandre Guilmant-Amédée (Boulogne-sur-Mer March 12 1837 - Meudon March 29 1911) was a French composer and organist. Like many other composers he was very talented on a young age he was 12 years when he was playing organ smoothly. He studied with Lemmens with Charles-Marie Widor and Gigout. Between 1871 and 1901 he the leading man in the Paris organ scenery along with his fellow students later on he teached at the Paris Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique inter alia Joseph Bonnet and Marcel Dupre. Known are his organ sonatas which are equivalent to the famous organ symphonies of Widor. His work was very popular. Also knownunder the title Morceau Symphonique Opus 88.

The Trois Impressions shows Karg-Elert both at his most Romantic and his most impressionistic. The movements’ nocturnal names Harmonies du Soir Claire de Lune and La Nuit are in French as the work is dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant the great French Organist of Trinity church in Paris. Sigfrid Karg-Elert was a German composer active in the early twentieth century whose broad output is eclipsed almost entirely by his works for harmonium and Organ instruments for which he was a gifted and prolific composer. His Organ works include the highly-regarded Sixty-Six Choral Improvisations Twenty Choral Preludes and Postludes amongothers. Many of his works are active in Organ repertoire.

The eight sonatas of Guilmant may well lay claim to classical rank. Originally conceived for the French organs of Cavaille-Col they are sufficiently broad in conception as to lose little if anything in their interpretation on English and American instruments. At the time of their composition (1874-1909) they brought to the Organ a new sense which had been too little cultivated by organists. This volume is edited by A. Eaglefield Hull and contains the First Sonata in D Minor Op.42 Second Sonata In D Major Op.50 Third Sonata In C Minor Op.56 Fourth Sonata In D Minor Op.61 and the Fifth Sonata In C Minor Op.80.

Charles-Marie Widor founded the French form called Symphony for Organ; large-scale academically 'sonata form' works of great power often containing a toccata-like conclusion. Guilmant continued the development of such works although he called his eight works in the form sonatas. This is his work Quatrieme Sonate from Opus 61 for Organ Solo.

Par LEMMENS JACQUES-NICOLAS. Fanfare by Belgian composer Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens, arranged for Flute Choir by Matt Johnston. Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823?1881) is a composer unfamiliar to most, unless you happen to be either an organist, or a Belgian (or a Belgian organist!). At the age of 26, he was appointed organ teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with two of his most accomplished students being Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. In 1879 he founded a school for church music in Mechelen, Belgium, which would later bear his name upon moving to Leuven in 1968. The Lemmensinstituut has since broadened its curriculum beyond church music and is a prominent, award-winning music conservatory. Among the sources of seventeenth century keyboard music, the Book of the Crosiers of Liège occupies an exceptional position since it contains some unica of composers as important as Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Peter Philips. It is also a remarkable manuscript in that this is one of the earliest appearances in organ music of accurate indications regarding registrations. Since its first edition in 1910, as the last volume of Alexandre Guilmant’s Archives des Maîtres de l’Orgue, musicological research has established new concordances, made some new attributions and proposed a few hypotheses which must still be confirmed.
In this way, the principal document concerning the organ in Liège and its music will again be accessible as a whole, with editorial remarks and commentaries, that seek to provide the reader with the most recent findings of musicological research as well as a rigorous and practical musical text.
