Yuri Maizels was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union. After the conclusion of the Second World War he was accepted at age 13 into the Naval Boarding Musical School in Leningrad (the school which had been organized in 1873 by Rimsky-Korsakov) to study the oboe. In 1964 he graduated from the College of Music with multiple degrees in oboe performance oboe teaching and conducting. During his career Yuri Maizels played in major orchestras working with such well-known conductors such as Yuri Temirkanov Mariss Jansons Yuri Simionov Valery Gergiev and others.

80 Graded Studies For Oboe brings together in two books a broad selection of 18th and 19th century repertory with studies by Blatt Brod Ferling Fetzen Garnier Hinke Luft Plelleur Freillon-Poncein Vithim and Weideman. The studies are arranged in order of increasing difficultly according to a carefully planned technical progression.

Douze Études is a set of difficult studies for Oboe by Roland Lamorlette. All studies are as difficult and it is advised that the player should start playing them at a slow tempo to acquire the perfect technique first then try the tempo indicated. The volume also provides some indication on the staccato technique for the Oboe. The text in this volume (prefaces nuances advices and explanations) is written in English French and German. Roland Lamorlette (1894-1960) was the principal Oboe Soloist at the Paris Opéra-Comique.

The classic scale and arpeggio studies of Gabriel Parès were adapted in the 1940s for like-instrument study by Rubank's Harvey Whistler and are now the standard for elementary scale instruction.
