Liebesträume (German for Dreams of Love ) is a set of three solo Piano works by Franz Liszt published in 1850. Two versions appeared simultaneously: for high Voice and Piano as well as as transcriptions for Piano two-hands.The three poems depict three different forms of love. Uhland's Hohe Liebe is saintly or religious love: the 'martyr' renounces worldly love and'heaven has opened its gates'. The second song Seliger Tod is often known by its first line and evokes erotic love. Freiligrath's poem for the famous third notturno is about unconditional mature love ('Love as long as youcan!' 'O lieb so lang du lieben kannst').This edition of the latter Liebestraume No. 3 is transcribed for Violin and Piano. The same melody is used throughout the entire popular piece each time varied especially near the middle of the work where the climax is reached. This favourite Piano classic should be a staple in any pianists repertoire and is a great new addition to the Violin programme as well!

Liszt was one of the greatest piano virtuosos of the 19th century and a very influential teacher who played an enormous part in the development of modern piano technique. For this reason the majority of his works make the highest technical demands of the performer - this selection, however, contains only pieces at an intermediate difficulty level. In addition to the hits (D flat major Consolation, Liebestraum No. 3) the moderately advanced student or amateur player will discover real finds such as the three pieces in the Bunte Reihe ( Colourful Series ), the earlier version of the Valse impromptu and the Romance oubliée ( Forgotten Romance ) and the later, simplified versionthe composer made of the i>Grand galop chromatique. This publication was based on the EMB New Liszt Edition, but bearing practical considerations in mind. Playing - is just playing. It requires a great deal of freedom and initiative from the performer. On no account should the written image be taken seriously but the written image must be taken extremely seriously as regards the musical process, the quality of sound and silence.

Not many people know that Franz Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and that these versions of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Árpád Pejtsik selected two of these for this volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegies I and II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour (pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E Major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellist in the Weimar orchestraof those days that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage ) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th century. The Valse oubliée No. 1 was transcribed by Liszt s virtuoso piano pupil Ferruccio Busoni Notturno, which became famous as the third piece in the Liebesträume series, is a transposed version of the original song ( O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst ) made by the editor of this volume.
