Cantus Missae-According to Otto Ursprung Cantus missae is the most beautiful pure vocal music of the 19th century . This is Rheinberger s only Mass written for double choir. It obtains its special character through the use of compositional techniques of ancient classical vocal polyphony which are combined with functional harmony and expressive songlike voice-leading. Rheinberger was honored for this Mass with the Gregorius Medal in 1879 by Pope Leo XIII.

Rheinberger's Mass in A Major is a work that ist easy to perform. Making no use of polyphonic developments, it remains within a harmonic style that is lightened by brief imitative phases. The Mass in B flat, op. 172, dates from 1892 and was published in two authentic versions. The instrumental accompaniment can be played either by an ensemble of wind instruments or by organ. Between Gloria and Credo Rheinberger placed a powerfully expressive a cappella Ave Maria, probably due to the fact that the Mass was first performed on a major feast day of the Virgin Mary: on the feast of Purification (Candlemas) in Breslau Cathedral.
