Litany is the first chorus from Edward Elgar’s ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ scored for SATB Voices and Organ or Piano accompaniment in this Novello edition.The Dream of Gerontius Op. 38 is a work for Voices and orchestra in two parts composed by Edward Elgar in 1900 to text from the poem by John Henry Newman. It relates the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory. Litany is sung by the chorus (‘Assistants’) after Gerontius’ deathbed prayer. Elgar disapproved of the use of theterm 'oratorio' for the work though his wishes are not always followed. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.Composed in 1892  Etudes Caracteristiques For Violin Op.24 is dedicated to the preeminent Hungarian Jewish Violin virtuoso and Elgar’s former Violin teacher between 1877-1878 Adolphe Pollitzer. Pollitzerbelieved that as a violinist Elgar had the potential to be one of the leading soloists in the country but Elgar himself having heard leading virtuosi at London concerts felt his own Violin playing lacked a full enough tone and he abandoned his ambitions to be a soloist.

Elgar's last major work was the cello concerto and it is unique in its poignancy and intensity. Through Jacqueline Du Pre's overwhelming interpretation this work has now received the recognition it deserved and it will undoubtedly remain one of the best-loved concertos of all time.
