Bartok’s Violin Concerto No.2 is an exciting work which is available here as a miniature score for study and reference purposes.Bela Bartok's interest in variation as a compositional method was most fully realised in this Concerto which he completed in 1938 and dedicated to his dear friend Zoltan Szekely. This is a detailed yet unostentatious Concerto in which the variations and intense expression the piece to life.

The 'Romanian Folk Dances' undoubtedly rank amongst Bartók's most popular compositions. The earliest version is scored for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918. The composer himself orchestrated this version in 1917. Several other chamber music arrangements (for example Zoltán Székely's version for violin and piano) were not by Bartók although he authorised them. The musical material derives from Bartók's collections of folk music which date right back to 1904 when he wrote down a melody sung by a Hungarian peasant girl. In the course of extensive travels throughout Eastern Europe Bartókcompiled an enormous collection of folk tunes (by 1918 his collection comprised no fewer than 2700 Hungarian 3500 Romanian and 3000 Slovak dances and songs) which would in all probability have been lost had Bartók not written them down. As it was some of them found their way into his compositions. In 1908 Bartók jotted down dance tunes in Transsylvania. They are the source of the 'Romanian Folk Dances'.

Violin Sonata in G major-Inspired by Béla Bartók’s Violin sonatas Ravel planned his own sonata for Violin and Piano in 1922 but at first did not get beyond sketches. Many interruptions ensued and the work was onlyfinished in 1927. He dedicated it to his violinist friend Hélčne Jourdan-Morhange. Regarding the sonata’s sparse thinned out compositional structure and instrumentation Ravel later emphasized thatthe sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of the Violin and Piano. Yet it still succeeded in winning a permanent place in Violin repertoire – not least because of its middle movement inspired by jazz elements and the“blues”. The fingerings in this Henle Urtext edition have been provided by two masters of their instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.

Allerheiligentag V. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: 'The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered ? the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge.' Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók?s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Violon

Instrument : violin and celloNombre de Pages : 4When Ligeti taught composition at the University of Stockholm in the 1960s, he met his famous Swedish fellow composer Hilding Rosenberg (1892-1985). Ligeti wrote this musical greeting on the occasion of Rosenberg's 90th birthday. The little piece is easy to play, composed in an extremely instrument-related manner and sounds really good. It shows that Ligeti, like Bach, Schumann and Bartók, was able to write easily playable and at the same time tonally convincing music in his personal style. Whether at an audition in a music school class or (as an encore) at a concert, it is impossible to resist the immediate charm of this composition.

This Sonata for Solo Violin was completed in March 1944 and was Bartok’s penultimate work. It was composed for Yehudi Menuhin who gave the first performance in New York on 26th November 1944. At this time more than any other Bartok was writing less complex more minimal rhythms which served to highlight his glorious melodies. Typically for Bartok this is a satisfying if serious and solemn work but one that will delight with its virtuosic elements and interesting melodic movements.
