The French-speaking Flemish singer, composer and lyricist Jacques Brel was born in Brussels in 1929. In the 1950s, he broke away from his bourgeois social background of his family and started an artist’s life in Paris, where he initially wrote chansons and earned a living by performing in small cabarets and bars.
