Par CAFARO PASQUALE. Pasquale Cafaro, born in S. Pietro in Galantina in 1715; he was directed by his family to 'scientific' studies (science of law) but soon abandoned them for musical ones. He then entered the Conservatorio della Pietà de' Turchini as a son at the age of 18, almost as an adult. His main teacher was one of the greatest musicians of the 18th century, Leonardo Leo, who immediately recognized the young man's talent. Long before writing Passalega, I harboured the idea of creating some form of organically homogeneous chain of musical tensions evolving ever more distinctly into a musical utterance, although still indeterminate in terms of pitch. The tissues forming the chain of those tensions were of relatively simple design, yet in spite of this ? or perhaps because of it ? they were incredibly well suited to generating the expressive narrative that accompanied me throughout that entire pre-composition period. After recognising the character of the musical potential in that material, I considered it to be similar to Baroque rhetoric in terms of the refined clarity and smoothness of the gestures. The work can be visualized by a video edited by myself. It is filmed shot by my father on an 8-mm film during a train trip in Germany in 1972. My grandfather briefly appears on the film, at the time the same age as I am now. As human beings and parts of the nature we are a links in an endless continuum - the train tracks reaching out to an eternity symbolise all this.' Composer, musician Timo Alakotila (b. 1959) is a distinguished, active and versatile talent in the Finnish music scene whose long career working with different genres of music ? folk music in particular ? has been ground-breaking. Alakotila?s works showcase his versatility: he has produced highly acclaimed classical music compositions and arrangements for Pekka and Jaakko Kuusisto, the Meta4 quartet, the Kamus and Tempera quartets, Eeva Oksala, Dalia Stasevska and Jorma Hynninen, among others. Timo Alakotila's Hope 2021 was commissioned by Kaustinen Chamber Music Week and its artistic director, violinist Kaija Saarikettu. The topic of the work invokes the hope for brighter future after the pandemic. It is scored for string quintet (two violins, viola, cello and double bass) and piano. The middle section, a wistful minuet with folk music features is enveloped with hopeful melody both opening and closing the work.
