A setting of a nativity poem from 'Her Maker?s Maker' by Michael Symmons Roberts 'New-made for a king' was commissioned by Andreas Klatt for Farnham Youth Choir. Scored mainly in four parts the choral texture is homophonic the harmony rich yet approachable by young performers with a decorative piano accompaniment. In the mould of a lullaby the piece?s over-riding calm is troubled towards the close by indistinct pp lontano interjections from the piano in response to the poem?s portentous closing words.

from La Chanson de la Naissance-This piece by Astor Piazzolla first appeared in a comedy theatre show by Kado Kostzer and Alfredo Arias called Famille d'Artistes. The original piece  La Chanson de la Naissance had a French text. Piazzolla is best known for his development of Tango Nuevo through his many works that cross the boundaries between tango jazz and classical music. This arrangement which is true to his original tune and harmonic scheme shows many of these traits. Here the simple tune and chorus is passed around all sections of the ensemble – including an unaccomapnied section – building to the choral tutti with thewords “joy to the world.”

Best known for his exemplary exuberant orchestral work The Planets Gustav Holst’s diverse gamut also included hymns pastoral songs and folk music. He and the poet Robert Bridges became great friends over time their friendship blossoming after Holst sought copyright of one of Bridges’ works in May 1925. This is a terrific hymn set to a poem of Bridges' typical of the combined workings of these two great English artists and has been edited here for SATB mixed choir and organ pedals by Alan Gibbs.

This opera is based on French philosopher andaviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella Le Petit Prince an international classic penned in 1943. It was composed by Rachel Portman the first woman to win an Oscar for a film score (Emma-1996) with text by NicholasWright. While Saint-Exupery's moving parable of self-discovery is the foundation of the opera's appeal it is Portman's music that gives the work its dramatic impact.
