In a Persian Market was composed in 1920 by English composer Albert W. Ketelby. It is a short tone poem that describes the hustle and bustle taking place at a busy, exotic Persian bazaar. Camel herders, beggars, a princess, jugglers, snake charmers and a myriad of others fill the musical scenes. The princess and her caravan eventually pass by and all is back to normal. Tohru Takahashi's arrangement perfectly conveys the sights, sounds and smells of a Persian market.

Written in 1814, the Fidelio Overture was the fourth and final version chosen to open Beethoven's only opera by the same name. Though not as lengthy or grand as its three predecessors (the Leonore Overtures 1 - 3), it served its purpose as an opening statement without overshadowing the music to come. This string arrangement transposes the original key of E Major into the much more playable key of D Major. It retains the original opening which alternates between powerful majestic bursts and lyrical harmonic progressions while finishing with the energetic presto to the end. Rhythms have been simplified but are very much in the spirit of Beethoven's writing. The optional timpani gives this arrangement a symphonic quality that closely resembles the original.Written in 1814, the Fidelio Overture was the fourth and final version chosen to open Beethoven's only opera by the same name. Originally written for a film (The Big Brass Band) that was never made, this terrific but little-known march turned out to be the last march that Fillmore would write. Unusually rich in harmony, it was not published in Fillmore’s lifetime. He had asked that it be named after his friend and fellow march composer, Karl L. King, if the movie was not produced.

This work originated in 1780, but was made famous by Igor Stravinsky in his arrangements of pieces for Pulcinella. Once again, Deborah Baker Monday has created a phenomenal arrangement (from Gallo's original) for students today to learn, enjoy, and perform. Duration: 2:15.

This wonderful string orchestra arrangement of Choral and Allegro maestoso from Felix Mendelssohn's great masterwork, Symphony No. 5, is arranged by Jim Palmer. The string parts are similar to the original score and will create a beautiful symphonic sound. A great festival choice that would be a dynamic closer for any concert!

Only the text and the last page of the autograph score of the Christmas Cantata “Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe” BWV 197.1 (197a) have survived, beginning with the end of the 2nd aria. This, along with the complete surviving 3rd aria are found in parody versions in the Wedding Cantata BWV 197 / BWV3 197.2, from which this cantata takes its BWV number. For a long time there has been a fascinating theory about the missing opening chorus: could this have been the parody source for the Gloria in the Mass in B minor? The musicologist and organist Pieter Dirksen has pursued this, creating a four-part choral version largely derived from corrections made in the autograph of the Mass in B minor. He has underlaid this with the text of the opening chorus (the German translation of the Gloria). What results is a convincing version of the Christmas Cantata – with one of Bach’s best-known choruses as the prominent opening chorus and plausible solutions for the other sections missing in the autograph.

Composed in 1876, Dvorák??s only piano concerto has been overshadowed by his other two concertos, for violin and violoncello, respectively. Performers and editors have often attempted to upgrade this pianistically unassuming work by adding stylisations of their own. Our Urtext edition revaluates the sources, frees the work from subsequent interventions and presents it to full advantage in its authentic form. The principal source of our new edition is the first complete print issued by the publisher Hainauer in 1883, which has been meticulously collated with the autograph. The anonymous original piano reduction is so full of mistakes that editor Robbert van Steijn decided instead to present the version by Karel Šolc.

The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. While the first movement of his famous fifth symphony is more often performed, the majestic and triumphant finale beautifully exemplifies the craftsmanship and genius of one of the greatest composers of all time. Slightly truncated in form, this masterful adaptation for concert band still retains the thematic material, power, and excitement found in the original. (MusicWorks).

Composed in the style of a military quickstep, Pas Redouble is a concert march reminiscent of the gallops by Offenbach and other 19 century composers. Transcribed for band by Arthur Frackenpohl in 1972, this work has retained a prominent position in the wind band literature. Dur: 3:20 (Grade 4).

Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.
