Dale Warland Choral Series-Setting the Wendell Berry 'To My Mother' but incorporating it for his parents Joshua Shank portrays the sense of wandering and confusion in the early sections of his music but ultimately finds the revelation of true unconditional love. Commissioned by Matthew Culloton and The Singers - Minnesota Choral Artists and chosen by Dale Warland for his G. Schirmer series this is a work worthy of the finest choirs.

Handel originally wrote Israel in Egypt in the late 1730s but this the well-known version was not written until twenty years later when he discarded the old one as out-of-date. The 'new' version is a two-act oratorio where the chorus is far more prominent and serves much greater variety of expressive purposes than one finds almost anywhere else in Handel's output. Notably there is extensive use of the double-chorus. It did not take long for this 1756 version of Israel in Egypt to assume a place alongside the Messiah as one of England's favorite choral treasures. Part I tells of the Israelites' deliverance from their Egyptian captivity at the hands of Moses; thetwelve choruses that describe the miracles leading to the Israelites' freedom are among the most stunning and colorful ever written -- images of hailstones pestilence and even the glorious parting of the Red Sea are achieved without once resorting to the kind of pictorialism that a lesser composer would relish. Part II Moses' Song recounts the Israelites' victory. Gian Carlo Menotti is frequently considered to be the greatest composer of American opera in the twentieth century. The Missa O Pulchritudo uses the Roman Catholic text for the Mass except for the Credo which is replaced by a Motet based on the words of St. Augustine. There is some occasional part-splitting in the chorus. This is the Schirmer Edition of the vocal score and includes a Piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment. This Mass composed in 1815 but not published until 1846 has great depth whilst also being lyrical and climactic. It was originally set for Soprano Tenor and Bass Soli SATB Chorus Strings and Organ (some years later Schubert added parts for Trumpets and Timpani); however this Schirmer edition of the vocal score contains a piano reduction by Alice Parker.

SATB-One of Berlioz's greatest works the Grand Messe des Morts is written for Tenor Solo SSTTBB Chorus and Orchestra. The scale of this work should not be underestimated: it runs at an hour and a quarter and the orginal scoring included no fewer than 16 timpani and four extra brass choirs! However not all of its music is massive (the extra forces explode onto the scene in the Tuba mirum portion of the Dies irae sequence in No. 2 and then disappear). Indeed much of it is quite intimate -- for example the slender No. 3 Quid sum miser which immediately follows the outburst in No. 2 or the opening of No. 9 Sanctus which features the solo tenor. Andthe Requiem ends in absolute tenderness the Lamb of God (No. 10 Agnus Dei) having taken away the sins of the world and accepted the dead into a new world of which we mortals can hear only vague echoes -- timpani strokes left over from the explosive Last Judgment held earlier in the mass now distant and gentle. This the Schirmer Edition of the vocal score contains a piano accompaniment arranged by Leopold Damrosch.
