The Concerto For Percussion (Op. 73) was written specially for Philips Records in 1968 and first appeared on a record issued in 1969. It has since been used several times as ballet music. It is scored for fourunaccompanied Percussion instruments with a set of parts available here. The conductor and composer Leonard Salzedo (1921-2000) was born in London and studied at the Royal College of Music with Herbert Howells. Aswell as conducting a wide range of Ballet companies he also wrote the music for several Ballets and Film scores but he is probably best remembered for his chamber music.

Score of Rolf Wallin's Stonewave for solo Percussion. Composer's Notes:The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called 'fractals'. These formulas used inthe fast growing field of 'Chaos theory' are relatively simple but they generate fascinating and surprisingly 'organic' patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen or played as music. One should think that such amathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of 'Stonewave' however is not one you would associate with math books. The steady insistent pulse and the use of sequences put squarely upagainst each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name ofLiberalism making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa.'Stonewave' is therefore an incantation as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaimsthe Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. This is effectively a work in three movements - Allegro Andante cantabile and Presto - which Davies likens to 'three obstacle courses bristling with technical difficulties'. However as he goes on to say 'young people arenaturally gifted with extraordinary rhythmic skills which normally remain untapped'. Given the opportunity older children have here the material for a highly arresting piece of music-making. Scoring also includes a small woodblock a small temple block and a small suspended cymbal. The xylophones are one each of the following: concert soprano alto and bass. The two glockenspiels are soprano and alto and the metallophones are bass and deep bass (avibraphone may be used instead of the latter). These studies will provide a challenge to all percussionists for whom there is a distinct shortage of suitable studies. Duration c. 5mins.
