Marchissimo will make a fantastic opening piece for any concert. It does however come with a twist! It can be played simply as written, but is really designed to be ??staged?? with players coming on the concert platform one by one as they begin to play. The piece actually consists of three marches in one, each of which highlights a section of the band. The piece culminates in a final climax where all three march themes are played simultaneously.

The idea behind this work was to create an opening piece, something to start a concert in an unusual way. The title is a portmanteau word derived from madrigal. The work indeed begins in Renaissance mood however gradually tries to shake of its modal start and, by contrasting different instrumental families, the work changes into modern clothes. Why not add a little Renaissance splendor to any concert with this unique new work?

When writing his tuba concerto, Philip Sparke wanted to create a work which explored the many aspects of the instrument’s technical and vocal qualities but without resorting to caricature. The result is a concerto in two joined movements, which can both be programmed individually, that contains both many lyrical lines together with stunning virtuosic passages. An outstanding concerto that tuba players and brass band audiences alike will enjoy and applaud.

It is dark and raining. You are on holiday in the Scottish highlands and looking for somewhere to stay for the night when you come across a magnificent Gothic castle. Even though the place looks a bit spooky, you book a room. As you are dropping off to sleep, you are startled by the sudden appearance in your room of a ghostly bagpiper and a loud scream from somewhere down the corridor. You jump out of bed and decide to make a quick exit. All members of your band will love this spooky tale especially as they can add their own ghostly sounds and effects.

Variations Paris, 1846 was composed specifically for the 25th anniversary of ‘Brass-Aux-Saxes’ in 2014, coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. As a result, Philip Sparke created this work to pay homage to Adolphe Sax. The work is a series of variations based on one original theme and gives the ‘fanfare orchestra’ a unique and rare setting you would usually only find in Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of Japan. Consequently, this shows all of the different aspects of the band through both colour and technique. Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present. Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona's playing for many years, having produced her first solo CD and writtenpieces for her previously. Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her soundon the singer's sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilst not being a 'Carpenters' pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park opens with an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This is taken up by the band but the soloist sparks a changeof mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns. A variation on the original melody leads to a short cadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

Dreamsong was commissioned by Geir Ulseth and the Nidaros Brass Band from Trondheim, Norway. After a short introduction, the soloistintroduces a rather nostalgic melody, accompanied by the lower brass parts. A fast central section is then played by the band, whichleads to a climax. Eventually, the main melody played by the solo cornet and flugel horn returns, overlaid with an ornamented counter-melody from the soloist, who then closes the piece with a short cadenza.

In this work the composer follows the models of Mendelssohn (Fourth Symphony), Elgar (In the South: Alassio) and Respighi (Roman Trilogy) by using instrumental color to produce a sunny piece, following a holiday in southern Italy, and describing a festival day in Naples. The work starts with brilliant woodwinds and percussion accompanying an opening celebratory theme in the brass. The mood subsides until a trumpet intones a new theme in the style of a Neapolitan serenade, taken up by the whole band. This is interrupted by a passing parade (the local band is not particularly accomplished!) but this disappears into the distance. A vivace follows in typical Neapolitan 6/8 meter, representing the festive dancing which characterises the local celebration. A change of mood is introduced by a horn chorus, but the dancing resumes and eventually joins with the horn theme to bring festivities to a close.

Saying Goodbye is one of a series of original works in pop, rock and swing styles Philip Sparke has composed to try and give brass bands their own popular vocabulary and identity. It could be described as happy-sad in mood, a feature of much of Sparke’s slower music. A perfect light addition for your concert. Handel’s oratorio Judas Maccabaeus was composed in a period of not much more than a month in 1746. As with the famous Messiah, use was made of previously composed material and indeed See, the Conquering Hero Comes! was grafted from another oratorio about Joshua. This arrangement of See the conquering Hero Comes will bring a great sense of ceremony to any concert. Chorus and March is een bewerking van See, the Conquering Hero Comes uit het oratorium Judas Maccabaeus, waarmee voor Händel in 1746 het grote succes kwam. Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale! Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire. The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.

Variations on a Scale wurde 2012 anlässlich des 90-jährigen Bestehens des CMV Excelsior Schraard (Dirigent: Thom Zigterman) in Auftrag gegeben und vom Orchester selbst bei der Jubiläumsfeier im März 2013 uraufgeführt. Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida’s involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

Music for Life was commissioned by the members of Community Band South in Pittsburgh to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The band's motto, Music for a Lifetime, provided the inspiration for the title. It is a work always full of life and vitality, even in its more reflective moments. Because of this, the piece is almost totally melodic, relying little on development or other formal devices. A series of lively melodic statements precedes a slower central section, designed to showcase the band's talented clarinet section. But the moment of reflection is short-lived and the livelier music returns to end the work in the same spirit that it started.

This work presents the listener with the wondrous grandeur of one of the great mountain ranges in America, the Sierra Nevada. When the music begins, the listener is greeted with the awakening of an early morning in the Sierras, complete with a mysterious, foggy mist that creates a feeling of complete stillness and peace with the world. As the mist slowly dissipates, hidden forms begin to make their presence known and gradually become a tremendous panorama of grand snow-covered mountain peaks. Grandiose and immense in all their beauty and glory, they stand before you with a sense of undeniable power, extending in all directions as far as the eye can see. Upon closer inspection one can imagine the circling golden eagles, the regal elk and royal stags, all lazily wandering the hills and canyons of conifers that stand tall, reaching for the passing clouds in hopes of gaining a few rays of life-giving sunshine and moisture. Look in another direction and you will see the immense rolling hillsides of colourful wild flowers, fluttering butterflies, birds darting about, sparkling waterfalls and all critters existing in harmony. After the day's activities the sun begins to slip below the horizon, the mist returns, and all living things prepare for another still night of sleep, serenity and the warmth of their secure bedding places.

Sanctuary was commissioned by Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass from New Zealand - and was performed as an own choice piece at the 2018 New Zealand National Brass Band Championships. It opens with an expressive cornet solo, hymn-like in mood. A slightly faster centralsection builds to a change of key and an expansive return of the opening melody, this time scored for full band. After an emotional climax the mood subsides, leading to a quiet close.

Kaleidoscope is a set of five variations of on the ‘Brugger Lied’ (Brugg Song) which is the traditional song of the town of Brugg. The lyrics tell of the geography, people and traditions of this charming and historic town, which is situated in the north of Switzerland, near to the German border, about halfway between Basel and Zurich. Each variation is based on tiny extracts of the theme, the whole piece therefore resembling the effect of a kaleidoscope, which juxtaposes small fragments of colour in a constantly changing pattern.
