Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. Philip Sparke had produced a CD recording with Sheona as soloist and had her wonderful sound in his ears while writing this piece. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves merely as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The piano accompaniment takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. The piano then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close.

The Green Hills of Tyrol (Les vertes collines du Tyrol) est une commande de Jrena et Beat Knüsel pour leur fils, le joueur d?euphonium suisse Joel Knüsel, pour célébrer son 20e anniversaire, en 2019. Ils souhaitaient une pièce adaptée à une compétition de solistes, peut-être fondée sur une mélodie écossaise ou irlandaise, et le compositeur Philip Sparke suggéra qu?un air varié à l?ancienne pourrait leur convenir. La pièce adopte la formule typique d?un thème suivi de quatre variations. L\'histoire de la mélodie d?origine est fascinante. Bien que celle-ci soit maintenant bien connue en tant qu?air pour cornemuse, ses racines se trouvent en Autriche ou en Italie, plutôt qu?en Écosse. La mélodie apparaît dans un ch?ur de soldats suisses dans l?opéra de Rossini Guillaume Tell (1829), mais était sans doute empruntée à un air folklorique tyrolien. En 1854, durant la guerre de Crimée, le cornemuseur-major John MacLeod, du 93e régiment des Highlanders, entendit des musiciens du contingent sarde interpréter des extraits de l?opéra dans leur camp avant le siège de Sébastopol. La mélodie lui plaisant fort, il l?arrangea pour ses cornemuseurs. Il l?intitula The Green Hills of Tyrol, d?après le passage de Tell dans ce coin du Tyrol dans l?opéra. Elle fut arrangée à de nombreuses reprises pour les formations les plus diverses. Cette nouvelle version, signée Georges Moreau, conserve l’authenticité de l’œuvre originale. La ligne mélodique plaintive est agréablement soulignée par la sobriété de l’accompagnement orchestral.
