French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published his Corsican Song for alto saxophone and piano in 1932. As with his other wind compositions, Corsican Song was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his father and mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his grandmother in to his compositions, as is the case with Corsican Song. This Tomasi work is unusual in composition through its exploitation of tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However, this Tomasi piece, suitable for advanced saxophonists, provides an exciting, alternative addition to the repertoire.

As the saxophone is commonly associated with the jazz style, classical music for the instrument had always been lacking and so when Paul Bonneau published his Concerto for Alto Saxophone in 1944, it was well-received by performers of the genre. Bonneau's composition was highly versatile, ranging from over fifty film scores, operettas, songs and other pieces for Saxophone, including this concerto. Comprising three movements, a typical performance lasts about fifteen minutes. Bonneau's Concerto for Alto Saxophone contains typically French characteristics, including chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combined make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for saxophonists.

Maï by Ryo Noda, a Japanese composer, is a unique piece of work for solo saxophone that is strongly influenced by Japanese music. With some sonority supposed to be quite close to those of a koto and of a shakuhachi, this piece is very technical and complex to play.The story behind this work is about the ghost of a Japanese Samurai. While his wife asks why he let her behind and left to fight in the war, he tries to justify his choices. Most of the work depicts the struggle within the mind of the Samurai, between ending his life and living in the end of his enemies. The screaming altissimo at the end is the climax of his struggle which then followed by a 10 second silence that represents his death. The technical abilities required are: large interval leaps, rapid trills, alternate fingerings to achieve pitch bending, multiphonics, altissimo, portamento and cutting tone.

Dancers is the second volume of a set of six pieces called Romantic Suite. Composed by Robert Planel for alto saxophone and piano, this second piece is for intermediate players. In Dancers, the piano starts on its own but is soon joined by the saxophone. The piece is divided in five parts, the first one being the main theme which is later repeated as the last one. The tempo is quite fast on most of the piece, except for the third section. The full set of six volumes features: 1. Italian Serenade 2. Dancers 3. Sad Song 4. Feeling Waltz 5. Christmas story 6. Muleteer's song. Robert Planel (1908-1994) was a French musician and pedagogue.
