Amon g the most famous of twentieth-century art songs, Sea Fever has been imaginatively recreated for solo piano by Roderick Williams, whose accomplishments as a master of English lieder are matched by a composer's ear for the latent potential of an existing work. In this case, the inspiration was the playing of the dedicatee, the notable British pianist Maria Marchant, and the suggestion of Bruce Phillips of the John Ireland Trust for a 'free arrangement' in the manner of Liszt. In fact, the new version remains true to the original while offering the performer a degree of poetical bravura by no means superfluous or transcendental. It could well be programmed with other piano music by John Ireland, or stand alone as a highly effective and instantly recognised encore. A recording by Maria Marchant is now available from SOMM Recordings (SOMMCD 0174).

Musi c for three violins and bass formed a small yet distinctive corpus of instrumental music at the Restoration court of Charles II and in the Catholic chapel of James II. Introduced to England by the German violinist Thomas Baltzar, the genre was adopted by John Jenkins, whose ten late fantasia-suites for three violins, bass viol and continuo, together with Gottfried Finger's five sonatas for the same group of instruments, constitute the bulk of this volume. Other representative works include Baltzar's own Suite in C major and Bartholomew Isaack's Ground in A minor, all fascinating progenitors of Purcell's crowning contributions to the repertoire, his Pavan in G minor and 'Three Parts upon a Ground'.

Croc e's madrigal style may be compared to that of Thomas Morley, and the Musica Sacra settings of the seven penitential psalms, set for six voices and published by Thomas East, were hugely popular in England. They were spoken of admiringly not only by Morley himself, but also by John Dowland and Henry Peacham. High ly appealing to scholars and amateur and professional performers alike, the nine pieces in this collection comprise all the known trio sonatas that survive complete and appear to have been written in England during the reign of Charles II by composers other than Purcell. John Blow's G minor Ground and Sonata in A, and a G minor sonata by Draghi, not only stand comparison with music of the younger composer, but also, in their varied approach to form, throw fascinating light on his more Italianate approach to the genre. All the sonatas - works by Robert King (a Sonetta after the Italion way), Johann Gottfried Keller, Nicola Matteis senior and Gerhard Diesineer - are attractive to play and listen to, and the collection, also including surviving violin parts from works by Blackwell and Eastwick, significantly extends our understanding of the context in which Purcell's famed sonatas arose. Performing material is available.

Alth ough the English madrigal has been fairly described by John Rutter as a completed historical form, its younger sibling the partsong still flourishes in the hands of sympathetic composers like Edmund Jolliffe, who can clothe secular texts with music a cappella that fits their sentiments like a glove. In fact John Donne's verse, though of a later period, receives a setting that might even be described as madrigalean in its sensitive response to verbal rhythm and feeling. And for anyone who treasures the heritage of music for chorus by English composers such as Walton and Britten, and indeed Rutter himself, Jolliffe's command of a tonal idiom that is rich in sensuous detail yet also broadly appealing is an additional pleasure.
