Gius eppe Torelli (1658–1709) was the reputed father of the instrumental concerto; what is not widely known is that he also composed sacred vocal music. Discovered in 2001, when the Berlin Sing-Akademie’s archive was returned from Kiev (where it had been hidden away since the Second World War), his four-movement motet Ite, procul abite, maestitiae (‘Go, begone, sadness’) for soprano, two violins and continuo is a splendid example of its genre. Torelli probably wrote it at Ansbach during a brief interregnum around 1700 when his employer, the Basilica di San Petronio in Bologna, temporarily suspended its orchestra, leaving its members to seek their fortune elsewhere. This exciting and technically challenging work, full of exquisite touches, reaches the heights of similar motets by Alessandro Scarlatti and looks forward to Vivaldi.

The ten motets (Concerti sacri) for solo voice, violins and continuo making up his Op. 3 (1703) are among his most attractive compositions, standing on the borderline between seventeenth-century bel canto and the progressive trends represented by Alessandro Scarlatti and, later, Antonio Vivaldi. The two motets for bass voice concluding the set delight through their euphony and the sheer swagger of Aldrovandini’s writing for the voice.

In Sonata 3 in F major the opening Largo is styled as a Siciliana, this species of movement being especially common in the flute repertory on account of the instrument’s pastoral associations. The Spiritoso that follows is a movement both tuneful and energetic. A concluding Presto ramps up the excitement, introducing some piquant harmonies. Sonata 4 is in the shady key of C minor, relatively rare in flute music of the eighteenth century because of intonation difficulties. The opening Arioso is attractively plaintive. The Allegro moderato that follows has some very effective imitative interplay between flute and bass. For the finale, Balicourt writes a soulful Cantabile in minuet style that recalls similar C minor movements in the music of Alessandro Scarlatti and Francesco Geminiani.

This set of four works, all in minor keys, is unique for the energy of the fugal writing, the passionate chromaticism of the slow movements and the playful, asymmetrical phrasing of the final Minuets. The scoring leaves open a range of performance possibilities, from one to a part with or without continuo (following the varying density of figured bass and the instruction senza cembalo) to orchestral performance as suggested by the English Concerto arrangements.
