I decided to write a kind of latter-day equivalent to the Bachcantatas with two soloists (soprano and baritone). The texts are derived from a variety of Psalm sources: some in Latin some in English a meditation by Savonarola and a Henry Vaughan poem.' - John McCabe

This title is taken from the compilation French Songs And Choruses For Mixed-Voice Choir (NOV165198) This song declares itself immediately as a variation on the Renaissance and Baroque tradition of the pastoral song with its use of the title 'To Chloris ' (Chloris and Phyllis were the generic names for pastoral shepherdesses and nymphs in Renaissance and Baroque literature) and the ornamentation in the accompaniment the repeated trills and turns also evoke the realm of the Baroque song. However the work is not a mere imitation; it is a modern song one that pays homage to rather than imitates the older models.

Kantate Zum 23. Sonntag Nach Trinitatis, Bwv 139, 1724. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Bach's chorale cantata with its opening text 'Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich kann verlassen” (Tis well with him who on the Lord trusts just like a child) BWV 139 was performed for the first time on 12 November 1724 in the main Leipzig church service. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout - this is followed by a lively tenor aria 'Gott ist mein Freund” (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria 'Das Unglück schlägt auf allen Seiten” (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The magnificent interweaving of harmonies and dialogue-like Voices in Handel’s For Unto Us A Child Is Born make it a perfect addition to the festive choral repertoire. German-born British Baroque composer George Frideric Handel originally composed this piece in 1741 for the English-language oratorio Messiah which eventually became one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. As the last song of Scene 3 of Part I of the oratorio which addresses Isaiah's specific prophecy about the virgin birth of a Messiah For Unto Us A Child Is Born tells the news of Christmas thebirth of a son in Isaiah’s words as found in the Scripture (Isaiah 9:6). The delicate familiar theme is introduced by the Sopranos and taken up by their counter-voices the Tenors later the same dialog is given over to the Altos and Basses. The tutti culminates in 'Wonderful' 'Counselor' 'The Mighty God' 'The Everlasting Father' and 'The Prince of Peace'. As an individual piece this song arranged for SATB Voices with Piano accompaniment is perfect for Christian settings especially during the Christmas season.
