Par TORSKANGERPOLL IDAR. This piece for beginning band was written as a commission for Norsk Noteservice to the “Music for Beginners” serie. The piece is a feelgood item with limited range for all instruments, suitable for young players. The rhythmic structure is repetitive and polyphony is often in the “call and response” form. Par BRAKSTAD JOHN. 'Interlude for Band' is an arrangement based on the theme from 'Affinity and Fellowship'. 'Affinity and Fellowship' was commissioned by Nord-Odal Concert Band, and published by Warner/Chappell Music Norway (Noteservice). 'Interlude for Band' is a piece with elements of ensemble, including an important solo part. Norwegian Festival Overture. Par HALVORSEN JOHAN. The Norwegian Festival Overture was written for the grand opening of the National Theatre on September 1st, 1899. In the opening bars, one can virtually imagine the stage curtain being drawn aside, and the stage is revealed to the audience. The trumpets openly quote Peer Gynts return from Grieg's music to the play Peer Gynt. The main part of the overture consists of a theme in Norwegian folk music style, which Halvorsen brilliantly develops thematically and contrapuntally. The work can probably be seen as pompous and at times seems somewhat overwrought, but then Halvorsen himself, ever so slightly self-deprecating, has written Pomposo over the grand conclusion of the work. The arrangement of the overture was written to The Royal Norwegian Navy Band for a concert in Halvorsen’s native town of Drammen in 2016. The arranger has tried to preserve as much as possible of Halvorsen's brilliant orchestration. BWV 528, Andante. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. This arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach Andante from Organ Sonata No. 4 was created under the Covid times. Under the long days of isolation, I found the recording of the Islandic virtuoso Vikingur Olafsson. A fantastic recording, and An arrangement for windensemble grew in me. I have tried to find the most beautiful sounds of the windband, and challenge the whole band. I recommend listening to the recording to understand my goal with the arrangement. Ballad from Fantasy Pieces for Piano Op. 36. Par BACKER-GRONDAHL AGATHE. Agathe Backer Grøndahl’s ‘Ballade’ can best be described as a Romantic character piece. Such one-movement piano pieces with titles that loosely indicate a mood/idea made out a central genre in the 19th century. In Backer Grøndahl’s production, several of these are grouped under the term ‘fantasy pieces’. There are six collections with a total of 48 fantasy pieces on her opus list and ‘Ballade’ is from the first of these (Op. 36), published in 1895. ‘Ballade’ is a broader work than the other fantasy pieces. It is built around a dramatic theme that keeps returning after episodes with strongly contrasting thematic material. The arrangement is close to Backer Grøndahl’s original composition. It is transposed a semitone down: from E flat minor to D minor. The arrangement contains some challenging passages and is well-suited for amateur bands of a certain level. Par WILLIAMS JOHN / HVEEM DAVID (Arr.). «Cantina Band (or «Mad About Me») was written by John Williams in 1977 for the film Star Wars (later Star Wars IV: A New Hope). Even with quite a bit of the Star Wars music being quite well known, Cantina Band is literally in a style of its own. In the Star Wars-universe this style is called «jizz», Williams’ take on the more well-known genre «jazz». Williams was tasked by Star Wars-creator George Lucas to make music that sounded like «several creatures in a future century finding some 1930's Benny Goodman swing band music ... and how they might attempt to interpret it» and ended up with Cantina Band #1 and #2. Both numbers are played in the legendary scene taking place in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina where Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi gets in a fight causing even the band to stop playing. The band, which goes by the name Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, comes from the planet Clak'dor VII and specializes in jizz and the nearby, slightly older style of jatz. Performers of this music often go by the name 'jizz-wailers', and the Bith people from Clak'dor VII are especially well suited for jizz-wailing since they can hold every note as long as they want thanks to a unique respiratory system - something many perhaps would like to be able to do in the performance of this arrangement as well. The arrangement is relatively faithful to Williams' original version, but with a somewhat different ending. Although the woodwind section undoubtedly has the biggest technical challenges, an understanding of the musical style is the very key to making the arrangement sound good - and here all groups must work together. Playing lightly but quite articulated, and very precise, will be an absolute necessity to get the music drifting off all the way to Tatooine. In measure 113 there is a small improvised solo in either trombone or trumpet, but if you want the real authentic Cantina Band-sound this is of course done on a steel drum. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie

Dances from 'The Cossacs'. Par ELLING CATHARIUS. The Opera “The Cossacs” by Catharinus Elling is based on the Nikolai Gogol novel about Taras Bulba. “The Cossacs” was premiered in 1897 at Eldorado in Kristiania (the old name on Norway’s capitol Oslo). Despite positive response in the papers of that time, the opera was newer performed again in it’s entirely. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation have an abbreviated recording in it’s archives, but no complete performance is known to date. The Norwegian National Opera Orchestra recorded both the overture and the dances in 2021, conducted by Ingar Bergby. Thet are both a part of the CD “Norwegian Opera Overtures”. This arrangement is not commissioned by anyone, but rather written to better the availability of quality Norwegian orchestral music arranged for Concert Band. Different animals and their characteristics are the theme of each movement, and the melody alternates between the different sections of the band to emphasize this. Grand Nordic Tune. Par OLSEN VADSTEN OYSTEIN. 'Storslått' or in English ?Grand Nordic Tune? is one of many original pieces written by composer Øystein Olsen Vadsten. 'Slått' is a general term for music played to traditional Norwegian dances. ?Grand Nordic Tune? was a commissioned work for the Rælingen Musikklag's 70-year anniversary concert in 2022, where the piece was premiered. They wanted something a little pompous, and preferably something in the style of Nordic folk music, which the composer is known for. The title in Norwegian then was obvious, 'Storslått', which in Norwegian has a double meaning, both a big tune and, in a double meaning, pompous or magnificent. As usual, the starting point is a traditional Nordic dance form, and this time the choice fell on the distinctive Swedish 'polska', which is played in ¾. The dance, despite its name, reportedly has no connection to Poland, but is entirely of Scandinavian origin. It has been danced for centuries, and has also been called the devil's dance, because it had a hypnotizing effect on people, so that they could not stop, but danced themselves to death. Hence people thought that it must have been the devil who caused it. Sverddansen. Par ROGERS SCOTT. The sword dance is a tradition in many cultures. The Scottish sword dances date back to the 15th century. This traditional melody captures all the excitement and energy of the sword dance through insistent rhythms, variation in dynamics and a big accelerando at the end. The Return of the Pirates. Par MINDE FAGERLI ROAR. 'The Return of the Pirates' is a five movement suite of music originally composed for a summer course arranged by The Norwegian Band Federation. The five movements describes scenes for the pirates' story. In the first movement they sing a shanty while preparing their ship to sail. I the second movement the pirates sails into a storm. In the third movement they sing a song to open å treasure chest. The fourth movement is a dramatic swordfight. Solo for Euphonium and Concert Band. Par OLSEN VADSTEN OYSTEIN. “Song for Frances” is a classic love ballad, written for concert band and brass band, with a soloist on euphonium. The piece always has the soloist in focus and gives him plenty of room to show off, both a warm sound and technical skills. In the first part of “Song for Frances”, the basic melody is clearly presented, while the rest of the piece is more of a written 'as if improvisation' with various melodic and technical 'whims'. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. This arrangement was written for Norwegian School Band Madlamark Skolekorps to their participation at the Norwegian Championships 2023. The arrangement will work excellent also for a wind ensemble (one player to each part), but the clarinet parts should always be doubled. Euphonium II is optional, but it’s recommended to use also this when there are two players or more on this instrument. Concerning percussion, timpani is the most important part, but it’s recommended to also cover cymbals and mallet percussion. The articulation and dynamics are kept as close as possible to the original version by Dvorak. However, some changes has been made to make it more suitable for a wind instrumentation. The timpani part is identical to the original version except for some places when the trumpet signals are doubled in the timpani part. Staccato notation should not be played short here, but rather separated. At faster passages, the music should be played endurant or legato if possible. Par JORGENSEN AXEL. Axel Jørgensen was the solo viola in The Royal Danish Orchestra, and as a composer he had a large output, especially for brass. His Romance for trombone and orchestra is one of his most performed pieces, and was first performed by Anton Hansen, the famous teacher. Par ABBA / ULVAEUS BJORN (Arr.). This song by ABBA is the core of the European disco-sound in the eighties. It was released in 1980 when ABBA was in its superstardom. A good tune with almost a sing-along guarantee from the audience. This arrangement in the Young Band series is suitable for many bands as the instrumentation is limited in its demand to number of instruments. In the same series several ABBA items are available, and this piece can be programmed alongside other ABBA songs from the same series. This arrangement is similar to the original in form. Hedwig's Theme is the easily recognizable melody that musically binds together all of the Harry Potter films. Composer John Williams has used the tune as a leitmotif, setting it in different moods according to the situations in the movie, yet always reminding the listener of it’s connection to the main characters of the film. The melody is intervalic, with many interesting dissonances.
