Les Ténèbres s'inspire du poème éponyme de Charles Baudelaire et explore la riche palette sonore issue de la combinaison entre la trompette et l'orgue. La musique ne prétend pas reproduire l'imagerie propre du poème mais essaie de capturer son atmosphère à la fois sombre (voire menaçante) et éclatante. These Carol-Preludes were written in 2008 but the idea was in the composer's mind for many years before this. Essentially they revive the old style of the Chorale- Prelude but using carol tunes instead of hymns or chorales. They are derived from German French and English melodies some of the German tunes were found in my mother’s old school songbook from her schooldays in Germany after the First World War.

Two works for the organ that are both composed around plainsong textures and melodies together as a unified pair of performance pieces.Reliqui Domum Meum was first performed in Orkney 1996 by Heather Rendell and wascomposed for the memorial service of organist Richard Hughes of Kirkwall Orkney.Veni Creator Spiritus was first performed at Rochester Cathedral in 2002.The overall mood of this sensitive commemorative piece first performed in April 1996 at Kirkwall East Church on the Orkney mainland by Heather Rendall is quite sombre - if anything even more simple and restrained than that of Veni Creator Spiritus. The hushed carol-like central section - sounding as if the adapted chorale were being heard like some distant memory or from afar - is of touching simplicity

3 Organ Chorales - In Memoriam Kjartan Hoydal was composed by Sunleif Rasmussen in 2016 based on melodies by Jógvan Waagstein. 'This is the only published work for solo organ by Rasmussen though an earlier piece (A Light is Lit 1993) is scored for organ with electronics. As with all his music the titles of these three ‘chorales’ (perhaps better described as fantasias) – Breaking Waves Flying Storm and Summer Morning – suggest a strong connection with the landscape of his native Faeroe Islands. Spectral harmonies combine with rushing manualfigurations to create exciting virtuosic music that is satisfyingly characterful'.  

This set of three pieces was first published in 1905. It includes the 'Adagio in E' a piece popular with organists ever since.

Orgelbogen - 17 Preludes and Chorale Fantasies (1955- 2014) by Per Nørgård. Edited by Ivan Hansen. A review in the July/August issue of Choir and Organ magazine stated that Orgelbogen is comprised of 'rigorous works in and uncompromising idiom by a major figure far removed from the world of the Anglican organ loft and choir stalls' concluding that '[a]nyone with an interest in contemporary composition for organ should investigate this - it's a beacon of clear-minded compositional integrity. A review in the May-July 2016 edition of 'The Organ' Magazine states that 'the inherentquality' of this publication makes it 'very strongly recommended to organists of all ages and technical accomplishment.'
