Purcell Dido and Aeneas (Full Score, paperback) The opera ?Dido and Aeneas?, a recount of the well-known story from Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid, has established itself as a favourite with the public. This is due to the skill of composer Henry Purcell and his librettist Nahum Tate, who combined an overriding tragic theme with masterfully inserted comic episodes. Long believed to have been conceived in 1689 for a performance at a ?School for Young Gentlewomen?, scholars have debated the origins of ?Dido? in recent decades, a process hampered by the lack of early musical sources. This edition addresses these challenges and evaluates the earliest sources that reproduce the opera in its surviving form. Surprisingly, these date from the 1770s and 80s, some ninety years after the work was written. Three key manuscripts ? now held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (UK), at Tatton Park Library which is a National Trust property near Manchester (UK), and at the Wakayama Prefectural Library (Japan) - were all copied from the same original, most likely a handwritten score from 1704 which reappeared in the early 1770s, only to disappear again. This is the first 'Dido' edition based on the Tatton Park manuscript as the main source. It was produced during the second half of the 18th century by Philip Hayes, one of England's most prominent musicians. He was known in musicology for his meticulous copies of Purcell's music, often from the autograph manuscripts. Broadly speaking, Gabrieli?s contributions to collective anthologies fall into the following categories: 1) celebratory compositions, in several cases conceived as individual contributions to madrigal cycles by various composers in honour of more or less prominent Venetian or other personalities; 2) compositions originating in social and cultural circles close to Gabrieli; products of the composer?s habitual interaction with patrons, poets and musicians in mid sixteenth-century Venice, these compositions are published in anthologies containing similar works by other composers in Gabrieli?s milieu; 3) individual madrigals inserted in generic multi-author anthologies. Vol. 10/I features eight compositions on texts in Latin, Italian and ?stradioto? dialect (a linguistic concoction in which words of Greek origin appear against a background of simulated Venetian dialect). These include Gabrieli?s contribution to a Corona of nine sonnets by various composers on the death of Annibale Caro, the celebrated man-of-letters whose production comprises a highly successful Italian translation of Virgil?s Aeneid. The entire Corona is edited in the Complete Works. Gabrieli?s presence in multi-author anthologies follows a predictable pattern. The young composer?s earliest madrigals appear in editions of music by well-established authors (Vincenzo Ruffo, Cipriano de Rore) or collective anthologies edited by enterprising local musicians or other cultural figures (Giulio Bonagiunta, a singer at St Mark?s; the Venetian poet, actor and musician Antonio Molino). This edition unites all the purely instrumental and dance numbers from one of Rameau?s most popular operas, along with those from his last one-act opéra-ballet ?Io?, which was left unfinished at the time of his death. ?Platée? is the setting of a libretto by Jacques Autreau that Rameau arranged to be adapted for his own purposes, especially with regard to comic effects. In grotesque form, it shows Jupiter curing his wife Juno of her jealousy by feigning a marriage of love with the ugly swamp nymph Platée. Faced with such a ludicrous rival, Juno is forced to admit that her suspicions were unfounded. The opera was premièred in Versailles in 1745 for the wedding of the Dauphin Louis and Maria Theresia of Spain. The performance was a fiasco, however, for the coarse comedy and bizarre characters were deemed inappropriate by the wedding audience. It was not until 1749 in Paris that ?Platée? achieved its breakthrough, becoming Rameau?s greatest triumph to date. Another version with an altered text was performed from 1754 on. The plot of the fragmentary ?Io? deals with the amorous relations between the nymph Io and Jupiter in the guise of the shepherd Hylas, who becomes a rival of Apollo, disguised as Philemon. Opera in three acts. Par JANACEK LEOS. Leos Janacek began composing his seventh opera, 'The Cunning Little Vixen', based on the popular feuilletons of Rudolf Tesnohlidek, in January 1922. The first copy of the score, was completed by Vaclav Sedlacek in October 1923 but is now lost, while the second copy was prepared by Jaroslav Kulhanek in January 1924. The world premiere took place on 6 November 1924 under the direction of Ota Zitek and was conducted by Frantisek Neumann. The vocal score was published in Czech before the event and then again in 1925 along with the German translation by Max Brod, which is something of a separate version of the text in its own right. This volume of the complete edition reprints the critical edition by Jiri Zahradka, which was published by Universal Edition in 2010. The present edition newly includes transcriptions of the libretto in three languages (Cz/Eng/Ger) and a detailed Critical Report (Eng).
