The Trois Impressions shows Karg-Elert both at his most Romantic and his most impressionistic. The movements’ nocturnal names Harmonies du Soir Claire de Lune and La Nuit are in French as the work is dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant the great French Organist of Trinity church in Paris. Sigfrid Karg-Elert was a German composer active in the early twentieth century whose broad output is eclipsed almost entirely by his works for harmonium and Organ instruments for which he was a gifted and prolific composer. His Organ works include the highly-regarded Sixty-Six Choral Improvisations Twenty Choral Preludes and Postludes amongothers. Many of his works are active in Organ repertoire.

Each piece dedicated to one of the three UK organists who arranged the Karg-Elert Festival in 1930.

It takes its bearings from the liturgical calendar and the pieces can be easily played in church services evening recitals or small concerts. Included are pieces which are freely-composed or based on chorales either original works or arrangements by the editor. In this volume the works relate to hymns of the Reformation including some composed by Martin Luther. Enclosed in each edition are solo parts for C B-flat E-flat and Fwhich can be played by violin flute oboe clarinet trumpet and horn in F. For use in church services the chorale preludes are provided with accompaniments in the keys of the Lutheran hymnal. The present volume brings this successful series to its conclusion. Par BUNK GERARD. As a 20th century composer, Gerard Bunk developed a distinctive musical style comparable perhaps to that of Max Reger or Sigfrid Karg-Elert. In addition to Bunk?s large-scale organ work ?Legende? Op.29 and its symphonic version Op.29II, there is a further well-known ?Legende? Op.55b written for organ and string orchestra (or string quartet) which was composed in 1945. This edition offers the earlier version of this work, dating from 1914, in its original instrumentation for organ and brass quartet. In order to facilitate performance, the sketchily notated score is carefully supplemented by performance markings from the string version.
