Edited by Ron Erickson. Sonata No.4 completed in 1948 was entitled 'No. 2' by Antheil. It appears from the list of workds he made in 1944 that of the works from the Paris years he wanted to consolidate the Sonata No. 1 withthe third and ignore the second so that all the violin and piano sonatas before 1940 would be known as one work - called Sonata No. 1. Modern notation conventions have been adapted to Antheil's chromatic-polytonal language inorder to make the text as definite and as readable as possible. In this edition poytonal key signatures sometimes are substituted for masses of accidentals.

Violin Sonata no. 2 e minor op. 108-Fauré?s 2nd Violin Sonata was written in 1916 in Evian and Paris the first in a series of chamber music works. The second half of the 19th century represented something of a ?Golden Age? of the violin sonata in France: influential violin sonatas such as those by Franck, Fauré and Saint-Saëns were among the successful works of this genre, inspiring many further compositions. Saint-Saëns? Violin Sonata No.2 was written in 1896 during a stay of several months by the composer in Egypt: he began the main themes of all four movements as well as the canonic trio in Luxor and Aswan. The sonata was then completed on the Nile journey back to Cairo. That same year the sonata was premiered by Saint-Saëns and Pablo Sarasate in a concert celebrating the composer?s fiftieth stage anniversary. Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician often seen as his country’s greatest composer who now occupies a distinguished platform in the national and cultural heritage of his native Denmark. His Sonata No.2 for Violin and Piano (Op. 35) was composed in 1912 for a concert the following year by two of the composer's friends.
