An unapologetically tangoey Tango, first conceived as a warm-up piece for a group of over 150 flautists at the Birmingham Flute Choir Festival in March 2024, and here presented in a slightly smaller, more accessible version, without the Contra Flutes. The strident minor key 'A' section featuring, initially, the 1st and 2nd Flutes alternates with a more dolce, lyrical 'B' theme, which is first presented by the 4th Flutes and Alto Flutes. Everybody gets a chance for melodic material though, and there is plenty to work on in term of dynamics, articulation and style. Very enjoyable to play, and to listen to!

The pieces collected in LA FLAUTA ROMANTICA were written by three of the greatest Spanish instrumental virtuosi of their time: the pianists Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados as well as the violinist Pablo de Sarasate. When transcribing their piecesthe aim was to both create convincing chamber music works for flute and to preserve the typical Spanish sound idiom of this music. The CD provides demo tracks as well as the accompaniments of each piece.

Originally, it took four to tango. Dorff's sultry, slinky tango began life as a quartet (available for string quartet, string quintet, string orchestra, or for quartets of clarinets, bassoons, saxophones). This piece breaks beyond that restriction to become an enjoyable trio. Although arranged for Allen Krantz in this version, the technical demands do not require the skill level of Allen Krantz to pull it off. It Takes Four to Tango is now simply a delightful dance for two.
