Marc-Antoine Charpentier not only originated the Eurovision Melody, rather he also made an important contribution to French sacred music from the baroque with his oratorios, motets and cantatas. The four cantatas for the season of Christmas (CV 21.019-21.022) are now published in first editions. The Latin texts of these works for Christmas, the New Year, Epiphany, and the Purification are based on the accounts of the Gospels, which are paraphrased in the form of poetic texts. As in Charpentier's extensive Histoires sacrees, the musical structure is oratorical, with a part for the evangelist and texts spoken directly by biblical personages and groups of people (angels, Herodes, shepherds, wise men). In each work the vocal scoring includes two sopranos and a bass (those passages where a number of voices sing together can be performed either by soloists or by a choir). With this uniform scoring it would be meaningful to perform these works as a cycle, in the manner of a small Christmas oratorio. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2101900.

Like many Englishmen I had sung madrigals for pleasure - usually late at night with friends, after several glasses of wine. While these madrigals have their charm, and many are extremely beautiful, I found, as I began an extended exploration of the madrigal as a creative venture, that the richest source lies in the Italian Renaissance. In 1998 I embarked on a project to write a series of madrigals, eventually deciding to collect them in 'books' in the manner of Italian madrigalists, such as Monteverdi or Gesualdo. The Second Book is for an unusual six-part group - the Scandinavian Trio Mediaeval (3 sopranos) and three tenors (John Potter plus two from the Hilliard Ensemble) - and sets Petrarch in the original 14th century Italian. I focused on those sonnets known as the Rima Sparsi (scattered verses) and added one extra Petrarch setting - originally a radiophonic piece (Marconi's Madrigal) for CBC's Marconi Day. Gavin Bryars.

Greet the season with this festive a cappella arrangement of a true holiday favorite! Both sopranos and basses take the jazz waltz melody for a spin while the other voices provide an a cappella scat-syllable accompaniment. This versatile setting is fitting for the stage or for door-to-door caroling.

The 19th-century American folk hymn tune SHOUT ON is set for SATB unaccompanied voices. The 1775 text is by Samuel Medley and includes the recurring refrain, Glory, Hallelujah! Sopranos divide briefly near the end, otherwise this is straight SATB with very approachable writing. Bright and rhythmic, this anthem is perfect for small and large choirs alike. Duration: 3:00.

For SSSSAATTBB and organ. This meditative anthem sets words from Isaiah. The overlapping phrases of the sopranos, which float above the sustained organ accompaniment, move gently to a warm climax in the central section. This is sensual, evocative music which will be enjoyed by listeners and performers alike.

“Transcribed by popular brass arranger, Robert King, this edition of Johann Pachelbel's Nun danket alle Gott provides an exciting performance piece for Choir, Organ and a large Brass Ensemble. Pachelbel (1653-1906) is, of course best remembered today for his Canon in D. However, his vocal music is also significant. Nun danket alle Gott is a motet based on a short passage from Ecclesiastes. An important feature of the work is that the endings of sections are in four-part chorale settings, with the sopranos singing long notes values whilst the other voices present shorter note values. King's arrangement of this historical work makes for an exciting performance. &rdquo.

The aria Welt, packe dich, ich sehne mich nur nach dem Himmel (BuxWV 106) to a text by Justus Sieber from his book Poetisierende Jugend (1658) is composed for two sopranos, bass, two violins, violone, and basso continuo. After an instrumental Sonata, the five verses, interrupted by instrumental ritornelli sections, are presented by the different voices. The turning away from earthly things and the contrast between earth and heaven are illustrated in every verse by the change to 3/4 meter. The cantata ends with the repetition of the opening line of the poem Welt, packe dich and a rhythmically concise triad motif.

For small two-part choir (sopranos and basses), accordion, and piano The work is a setting of a text by William McGonagall which provides a miniature tour of London, from London Bridge to the Tower, St Paul's, Trafalgar Square, and Petticoat Lane. Moods and impressions are as important as the sights themselves. The unsynchronised accompaniment gives a street music flavour.

A recurring rhythmic motif begins in the accompaniment and anchors this simple but creative setting of the tune VENI EMMANUEL. The composer specifies sopranos/tenors on the upper staff and altos/basses on the lower, but we were intrigued by the fact that the piece is well-written and flexible enough to be successful in a variety of situations, large or small. Laudate Dominum is a charming motet beginning with a calm ostinato bass line. The other voices enter one by one, until the pretty theme in the altos, central idea of the piece, completed with a counterpoint in the sopranos. After a short series of heavenly variations, the middle sections begins, more rhythmic, vigorous and harmonically various. A triumphant repetition of the main theme in the tenors introduces the last part of the piece, initially based on the same material of the first one, but then continuing with a long and expressive Coda that completes the work with bright solemnity.
