Schubert was visibly adventurous in his early piano sonatas, as is apparent in their wide-ranging key schemes, diverging versions of many movements or entire sonatas, and numerous works left incomplete. This revised Urtext edition contains the sonatas he composed between 1815 and 1817. With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), each volume contains works by three different composers, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. In contrast to conventional piano anthologies, the pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The explanations included at the end of each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. In autumn 1827 Schubert composed eight 'Impromptus' for publication as a complete collection by Haslinger in Vienna. When the plan fell through Schubert offered his 'Impromptus' to Schott as pieces which 'could be issued individually or all four together'. The name of the works probably originated from the publisher Haslinger and Schubert also used it for his collection published later as op. posth. 142. The lyrical-romantic works are suitable for advanced piano students and have the character of sonata movements. Originally for flute and piano, Schubert's reworking of 'Trockne Blumen' - the eighteenth song in his song cycle Die schöne Müllerin - is here adapted for the violin. It was quite common in Schubert's own time for composers to write works 'for flute or violin' and in keeping with this practice, violinist Jacqueline Ross has prepared this edition, along with notes on the musical background and critical commentary on the violin editing. Her research into 18th and early 19th century performance practice has been widely recognised and has influenced her recordings of baroque and classical repertoire. This includes the Naxos release of the complete works of Schubert, recorded on historical instruments, in which this adaptation of 'Trockne Blumen' is featured. Mittlere Stimme / Medium Voice-As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically.The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first 'Hagars Klage' (D 5) dated 30 March 1811 is also his first complete surviving song. Thefirst eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811 1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied' D 23) which the only one of these songs was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131 3. His apprentice work as it were was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss' D 84) was written at the same time. This volume contains lieder originating during the latter half of 1815 between August and November. Three series of lieder each based on a particular poet immediately catch the eye: a number of Ossian settings a group of Klopstock lieder and finally another set on texts that Schubert found in a Viennese almanac (Selam). Des douze compositeurs de notre série « Au piano », Franz Schubert était sans doute le moins à l'aise au piano ? mais néanmoins quels chefs-d'?uvre il nous a laissés pour cet instrument ! Il n'est guère de pianiste qui ne soit immédiatement captivé par l'atmosphère joyeuse mais mélancolique des impromptus et des Moments musicaux de Schubert. Même les pièces simples de Schubert au début de ce volume réservent des rebondissements surprenants qui leur confèrent une profondeur qui leur est propre. Ses danses ne sont pas non plus de simples « divertissements ». Peu importe à quel point ils peuvent sembler charmants à première vue, il y a toujours un ton mélancolique dans ses valses et ses ländler. Cela semble refléter le pressentiment du compositeur gravement malade de sa propre mort.

The autograph of a composition always makes fascinating reading - and this is particularly true of Schubert's Trio in Eb major op. 100, as it underwent many changes during its composition.
