Piano Trios-Les trios avec piano comptent parmi les grands genres de la musique de chambre classique et Brahms s?y consacra très tôt. Il composa son opus 8 au cours de l?automne et de l?hiver 1853/54 c?est-à-dire à l?âge de 20 ans. Par contre ses deux autres trios avec piano op. 87 en Ut majeur et op. 101 en ut mineur ne virent le jour que 28 et 32 ans plus tard. On sait que pa-rallèlement au trio en Ut majeur Brahms travaillait aussi à un autre trio en Mi bémol majeur qu?il détruisit probablement. En 1889 il décida de reprendre son premier trio avec piano et le remania à tel point qu?il écrivit à Clara Schumann: «J?ai réécrit mon trio en Si majeur». L?édition Henle-Urtext reprendle trio op. 8 dans la seconde version parue en 1891 mais pro-pose également la première version en annexe.

Composés tous les deux en 1827 c?est-à-dire un an avant sa mort ce sont des ?uvres caractéristiques de sa maturité riches d?une grande invention mélodique alliée à une forte puissance créatrice formelle et une profonde expressivité. Si le trio en Mi bé-mol majeur op. 100 D 929 fut vendu à l?éditeur de Leipzig Probst (il ne parut cependant que juste après la mort de Schubert) le trio en Si bémol majeur op. 99 D 898 ne fut pas imprimé du vivant du compositeur. L?adagio en Mi bémol majeur op. post. 148 D 897 reproduit en annexe et connu plus tard sous letitre de Notturno fut conçu à l?origine comme mouvement lent du trio en Si bémol majeur. Schubert pourrait l?avoir considéré comme impropre à la publication du fait de son caractère sombre et expressif jusqu?au désespoir. Il ne parut d?ailleurs qu?en 1846. En annexe de ce recueil figure également le premier essai dans le genre du trio composé par Schubert à l?été 1812 alors qu?il était âgé de 15 ans.

Klaviertrio-As with all of his mature chamber music works Ravel also emerges as an innovator of traditional forms and techniques in his piano trio composed in 1914. Thus the ?Passacaglia? movement corresponds to the underlying form of theBaroque Period. The music on the other hand was according to Ravel ?like that of Saint-Saëns? which was surely meant ironically. For the historicizing template only served as a framework for experiments with musical idiom: froma constant oscillation between major and minor to combinations and overlaying of the most diverse metres. The fingering for our edition of this technically extremely demanding work was provided by the renowned French pianistPascal Rogé.

After an early work and a discontinued attempt in 1831/32 Mendelssohn made his breakthrough in this important chamber music genre in the summer of 1839 with the Piano Trio in d minor op. 49 which was to be followedsix years later by the Trio in c minor op. 66. On publication of the first trio Schumann took the opportunity to describe the composer as the ?Mozart of the 19th century? whereby he was obviously alluding to the mixtureof Classical and Romantic stylistic elements. The musical text of these two famous Trios has been thoroughly revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings. In addition HN 1297 also includes a Flute part for thealternative version of op. 49 (Flute instead of Violin) that Mendelssohn himself made.

I have always been interested in Pibroch (Piobaireachd) - classical bagpipe music that was prevalent from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries in the ScottishHighlands.
