Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass. Johann Sebastian Bach knew the value of good compositions by other composers, as is evidenced by contemporary accounts and by looking through the remains of his music library. However, in certain instances when copying works which he prepared for his own use he could seldom refrain from making corrections. In both of the following movements of the Missa Sancti Lambertie by Johann Christoph Pez Bach made only a few changes. With regard to his motive for copying out these rather simple movements, this may been due primarily to his inquisitiveness. In spite of their simplicity the vocal and instrumental parts are treated with ingenuity and the volume of sound is surprising, given the modest scoring. A setting of the well-known gradual based upon Philippians 2:8-9. Originally the Gradual for Maundy (Holy) Thursday, this motet is appropriate for Passion Sunday, Good Friday, Holy Cross Day, and Lent. Juxtaposing slow-moving harmonies with chant-like moving lines, this piece is part of Missa Mandatum, and thus a companion piece to the Agnus Dei, 80-784.

Telemann's Missa brevis on the Christmas hymn Ein Kindelein so lobelich is one of eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motetlike composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment. Gottlob Harrer, the successor to Johann Sebastian Bach as Thomaskantor, performed the mass in Leipzig at Christmas in 1750 and 1751 with an instrumental accompaniment and for this purpose he added two horns. They are included in the present edition as ad libitum parts. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3909700.
