From 1651 to 1728 John Playford his son Henry and John Young published multiple editions of the Dancing Master-collections of dance instructions and musical accompaniment. Over 500 distinct tunes were printed in these volumesand they give us one of the best pictures of English popular dance music in the 17th and early 18th centuries. This book presents 121 of these tunes adapted for the Mandolin-all are written in standard notation and tablature withchord symbols. Several pieces have been transposed into more mandolin-friendly keys. Playford's The Dancing Master is the classic compendium of English country dance tunes. First published in 1651 it went through eighteen editions in almost 80 years. In its day it was the most popular collection of its kind and engendered numerous imitations. The tunes selected by Playford and his successors were taken from many sources and demonstrate the extraordinary richness and vitality of popular melody in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This book brings together for the first time under one cover 535 tunes and their variants from the eighteen original editions. It provides a fund of musical material for performers whether folk musicians orbaroque instrumentalists and for class and instrumental music teachers. It is also an invaluable reference book for anyone interested in the history of English music.

The music Herbert Howells has tended to be unjustly neglected but his post-war output of orchestral and chamber works is currently enjoying a period of re-eveluation. This Herbert Howells society edition of six pieces brings to light yet another aspect of his work namely his Piano music. Even though he was an accomplished pianist himself music for Piano did not figure highly in his output. This volume contains some charming character pieces in the form of six Sarum Sketches two slow dances based on tunes from John Playford's The Dancing Master an extrovert piece based on a folk tune a minuet composed as a birthday present for John Ireland a briefvignette and an exquisite miniature. Editions continued to be published up until 1728.
