Ballett (Les Sylphides)-In 1883 Glazunov orchestrated a number of piano works by Chopin and called the suite Chopiniana (Les Sylphides). The music inspired the young choreograph Mikhail Fokin who later achieved international fame to devise the ballet Chopiniana in which he invented a plot for each of the five pieces Glazunov had orchestrated. The ballet was first performed in St Petersburg in 1907. Mikhail Fokin once said: Chopiniana was one of my greatest successes.

Élégie op. 44 for Viola and Piano-A precious gem of romantic Viola literature is now available in Henle quality. Thanks to the publisher’s good connections to Russian archives we were able to assess Glazunov’s autograph for the first timefor this first Urtext edition and uncover the discrepancies between the autograph and the first print. Written in 1893 for the Danish violist Franz Hildebrand the ?l?gie is one of the few originalworks of the 19th century for Viola and thus a welcome enrichment of the repertoire. Since the piece does not make any particularly high technical demands on the soloist the ?l?gie is ideally suited forteaching as well – and Tabea Zimmermann’s fingerings guarantee the best possible support.

The Violin Concerto op. 82 is one of Glazunov?s best-known works. Since the first performance in 1905 conducted by the composer when Leopold Auer was the soloist virtually all the great violinists have had it in their repertories. The structure of the work was fairly unconventional for its time. The lyrical and romantic first movement is followed without a break (attacca) by the striking and virtuoso second movement with its characteristic ?alla caccia? themes.

Written in 1934 by Alexandre Glazounov (1865-1936) this Eb Concerto for Alto-Saxophone is a fourteen-minute piece dedicated to Sigmud M. Rasher a famous Saxophonist and soloist. Initially composed for Saxophone and Strings there was no mention of a second composer even though the 1936 publication adapted for Saxophone and Piano mentioned the name by André Petiot (1886-1976). The concerto starts with an Allegro moderato in 4/4 followed by an Andante transition mainly in C flat major at 3/4 and ending on a Fugato in 12/8. The first performance of this concerto in public occurred after the death ofits author in Paris. Alexandre Glazounov (1865-1936) is a famous Russian romantic composer. Considered as a prodigy and mentored by Belyayev he composed ballets concertos symphonies and later became director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He had a strong influence on Stravinsky's and Shostakovich's careers and died near Paris in 1936. This concerto is a classical piece of the Saxophone romantic repertoire.
