George Bernard Shaw once remarked that although there are many composers of music for the Violin there are only a few composers of Violin music. But where Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is concerned Shaw declared that the Spanish musician's talents as both a performer and composer 'left criticism gasping miles behind him.' Famous for his fiery forceful and passionate playing Sarasate was equally renowned for the sweetness and purity of his tone and his impeccable technique. As a composer steeped in the colorful music of his native land he was well known for his many Violin works inspired by Spanish airs and dances written to display the instrument'scapabilitie. Carmen Fantasy Op. 25 is Sarasate's much-loved Violin fantasy based on Bizet's Carmen. It includes excerpts of different movements from the Carmen suite including the familiar Habanera and opening movement. Sarasate's popular arrangement and variations on the opera's themes are staples of the Violin repertoire. For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem #2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem #1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous - a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him' - and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion. The Baroque flautist and composer Quantz not only wrote at least 20 Flute concertos but he was also responsible for many innovations in Flute design including the addition of keys to improve intonation. The Windows was commissioned by Lincoln Cathedral to celebrate the unveiling of the restored Dean’s Eye Window. The text is by George Herbert (1593 1633) one time Canon of Lincoln. It was premièred on the 3 May 2006 by the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Aric Prentice. The second soprano part is optional and if used should be sung by an ensemble of singers positioned some distance from the main choir in a gallery for example or offstage in a concert hall environment.

Romberg's adaptation of melodies by Franz Schubert for Lilac Time (1921) and started him on the path to greatness. He subsequently wrote his best-known operettas, The Student Prince (1924), The Desert Song (1926) and The New Moon (1928), which were in a style similar to the Viennese operettas of Franz Lehar.
