Although Ferdinand David is mostly known as a composer for a couple of his instrumental works, namely a Concertino for Trombone, and this Concertino, Op. 12 for bassoon, perhaps he should be most well-known as the violinist who premiered the Violin Concerto of Felix Mendelssohn in 1845. He was appointed as concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig when Mendelssohn, a childhood friend, became the principal conductor in 1835. This Concertino for bassoon also exists in a version for viola, and now subsequently this edition for bass clarinet. It is a fun solo in two parts, first an aria-like melody, followed by a technical Presto agitato. The key has been kept the same as the original version, and although it is preferred to perform with an extended range instrument, indications are made for adapting it to a standard range bass clarinet.

Mass No.6 in Eb Major D950 - SATTB Soli, SATB Chorus, Orchestra (full score) - This mass was written in 1828 in the final months of Schubert's life. Like many of his late works, such as the C Major Symphony or Die Winterreise, Schubert never heard the Mass himself. The premiere, given by his brother Ferdinand in October 1829, met with great acclaim from the audience, and further performances soon followed. One contemporary reviewer called Schubert's final Mass surely one of his most profound and perfect creations. Our new urtext edition is based on the autograph score.on the autograph score.

Here's a choral fantasy on the traditional African American spiritual, “Soon I Will Be Done.” The grave Wagnerian opening sets the stage for the fiery main theme of the piece–a triplet feeling motif in the lower piano that continues under each chorus statement of the melody. The choir re-enters in the role of the “orchestra” in the second chorus with a haunting legato counter melody that leads up to the first verse. Each verse should have a Gospel/Stride feel with the choir, particularly the upper voices, switching to a more Gospel sound and rhythmic feel. The A sections should be performed with aggression and angst to contrast the calm legato middle section. That middle section is our musical prayer of hope that, like the sentiment of this Spiritual, will continue to live in our hearts despite the sometimes difficult realities of life.

Halloween is celebrated in many countries around the world on October 31. Traditionally, children go door-to-door dressed up in costumes and collect sweets and treats. A hollowed out pumpkin with a face carved into it, called a jack-o-lantern, is a traditional symbol of Halloween. Some jack-o-lanterns have scary faces, while others have fun, whimsical faces. The trombones in this piece represent the jack-o-lanterns with their whimsical faces—hence the title The Funny Pumpkins. Your trombone section will have immense fun with this new solo feature.

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key. This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.
