Op. 38. Par ELGAR EDWARD. This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. Elgar?s moving, poetic setting of the eponymous poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman is about a dying man and his journey beyond death to God. Before the eyes of the listeners, a musical image of the soul is created which flies past mocking demons to God with its protecting angel at its side, is allowed to look at him briefly, then faces the purgatorial fire of salvation confident and comforted. The work is a real rarity in the history of oratorio, and for large choirs it is a thrilling alternative to the established repertoire of Requiem settings. Its popularity is thanks to the suggestive, often sensuous power of the music, the great choral scenes of the demons and the Angel, and the three impressive solo parts. All previous editions were reprints based on the historic first printed materials, which are inconsistent. By contrast, Carus has produced a modern, newly-engraved edition, compatible in all sections, which takes all the sources into consideration and evaluates the autograph manuscript in detail. For this edition the complete orchestral material is available on sale, and the vocal score and full score contain both English and German singing texts. On November 6th 1929 at the Small Queen's Hall London Edward Elgar recorded five short improvisations at the piano. He used the piano extensively when composing and the recordings present a fascinating insight into the composer's genius referencing his work on the never-completed piano concerto and other themes in five remarkably cohesive and memorable pieces.Although these recordings were eventually released in 1975 there has not until now been a printed transcription of this music available. In this edition Iain Farrington has skilfully transcribed Elgar's playing to reconstruct the five pieces making a significant addition to the Elgar pianorepertoire.

The Chanson de Nuit was originally entitled Evensong though it is difficult to discern any religiosity in the work. And although published in 1897 scholars suggest that these works may have been written in the 1880’s. The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work especially with the composer’s fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit and its partner Chanson de Matin at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. This work was originally created as a Violin and Piano duet but Elgar then Orchestrated the work and it was presented at the Proms. Sincethen other arrangements have been created.

Salut d'amour op. 12 for Violoncello and Piano-Edward Elgar’s Salut D’Amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts the work became anenormous success early on. There are numerous arrangements but the only versions for which the autograph manuscripts survive are those for Violin and Piano (HN 1188) Piano solo (HN 1190) and Violoncello and Piano.Up tonow there has only been an arrangement of the Cello part made by the original publisher presumably with Elgar’s approval. We are now for the very first time publishing the version following Elgar’s autographmanuscript which for unknown reasons had never been released. Elgar was pre-eminently the composer of large forms. Complex lengthy development of musical ideas was for him a measure of genius. His songs with the exception of the orchestral cycle Sea Pictures were not often the vehicles for his most striking ideas. Paradoxically he was also bedevilled by a fine literally taste. He once told a friend that he felt it better to set the best second-rate poetry to music for the most immortal verse is music already. Some of his songs are therefore settings of poets now all but forgotten such as Arthur Salmon and Gilbert Parker: to their verse his music might make a vital addition. Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war! It is these words from Shakespeare's Othello that these works by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar fall back on. The work was a sensational success from the very beginning, especially March #1. At its premiere in 1901 under the composer's direction, the audience requested two repeats - in 1902 the words of 'Land of Hope and Glory' were added to the march at the request of Edward VII for his coronation ceremonial. The resulting version is now performed every year at the Last Night of the Proms. Motivated by the success of the first two marches, Elgar composed another three which were performed in 1905, 1907 and 1930. #4 is as formal as #1 whereas the others are of a rather melancholy nature. / Orchestre
