Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanic mountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement “Saghalie” pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The 2nd movement captures the beauty of the maiden “Loowit” with haunting flute and english horns solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement “Tanmahawis” utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments and rhythmic percussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Duration: 8:50Recorded by the Oregon Symphonic Band – Michael Burch-Pesses, conductor

A red covered bridge spans the Big Bureau Creek just north of Princeton, Illinois. This local attraction has served as the inspiration for this lyrical composition. The serene setting brings to mind the many people who have crossed that bridge in simpler times, and the stories of their lives. This piece hopes to capture those moments of reflection, joy, children playing, and powerful moments of resolve. This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The fife-and-drum melody, “Washington’s March”, leads inexorably to the historic beginning of the American colonies’ struggle for freedom.Vivid images combine to make this descriptive audience-pleasing composition a memorable experience for all that attend your performance. In the grand style of the British March, Highbridge Way should be played in a crisp and liquid manner paying close attention to the articulation and dynamic markings. The mezzo piano in m. 5 introduces the theme and slowly builds until m. 37, where the dynamic indication is forte. At m. 45, the dynamic is mezzo piano, and we are brought back to the theme at m. 53, which begins as piano and builds to m. 65 and to the finale. In the grand style of the British March,A Highbridge WayA should be played in a crisp and liquid manner paying close attention to the articulation and dynamic markings. The third movement is a jaunty march in cut time that alternates between major and minor tonalities, giving it a bit of a quirky attitude. Skybridge Suite was commissioned by the Sudlow Intermediate School Band, Davenport, Iowa (Terry Reiter, Director) dedicated to the memory of Robin Ciccotelli, Band Director of 20 years at the school. Skybridge Suite correlates to Book 2, Level 4 of Sound Innovations for Concert Band. (4:10) This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

This short processional was designed to be played as a concert opener but can equally be used as a sort of extended fanfare at presentations, graduation ceremonies and similar occasions. Its title evokes the noble grandeur of the university buildings in the English town of Cambridge where “pomp and circumstance” are still a normal part of life. A fanfare-like passage opens and closes the work and sandwiches a more legato central section.
