The danger for bassoonists in this sort of piece is that everything can sound accented so be careful to follow the articulation marks as closely as you can.RondolettinettoThisis all about building phrases through repetition. It relies largely therefore on control of the sound. Try to achieve a really obvious contrast of character between the opening phrases and the less refined con spirito episode. This might be played just a touch faster than the opening and closing sections if you wish. There is a hint of gentle parody in this piece if you can find a way of expressing that too.Sand-dance KidThis piece stretches the compass and range of expression even further. There are very obvious contrasts of staccato and legato and the phrase lengths of the middle section are far from regular. Try to scale down the dynamics at the end so that you end as softly as you can play.

Morton Gould's Diversions for Bassoon and Orchestra. Reduction for Bassoon and Piano.'The program notes for Diversions are contained in the descriptive titles of the movements: I.Recitatives and Preludes; II. Serenades and Airs: III. Rags and Waltzes: IV. Ballads and Lovenotes; V. Quicksteps and Trios. The virtuosic demands on the soloist are tantamount to those of a concerto. Because of the nature andtexture of the movements I prefer the less formalistic title Diversions. Scales and Daily Exercises (Part 1)-Fernand Oubradous (1903-1986) was a French bassoonist conductor and composer. He is best remembered for his tutoring compilation Complete Study of the Bassoon. This Oubradous series comprises three parts. The first of these focuses on scales and daily exercises. These cover a range of keys articulation intervals rhythms and range among other aspects. Moreover Outbradous' Complete Study of the Bassoon Part One contains a detailed fingering chart for the instrument. Complete Study of the Bassoon is essential to the progression of aspiring bassoonists.

Bassoon and Piano-Sunset Song op.42 for bassoon and piano was written and premiered in 1994 at the Los Angeles Museum of Art Bing Theatre. It is the composer´s second large work featuring the bassoon as soloist (after Hexen) and like Hexen it isalso dedicated to bassoonist Judith Farmer who premiered it with the composer at the piano.Sunset Song is technically a tour de force for both the bassoon and the piano. It is happy sensuous obsessive and at times mocking - often reflecting the time in which it was written and the events of a Mexico tour that followed the firstperformance during which the piece underwent revisions. The piece starts with an introduction played by the bassoon almost entirely. This introduction uses elements of 1950s pop music. A middle section follows where a static -almost MiddleEastern- ostinato rhythmic pattern beats with increasing tension. This pattern is then transformed to a Latin beat which finally returns the piece to the opening mood. The bassoon ends the piece in an irreverent tone with a pitch written two octavesabove the official limit of the instrumentâ??s register. The title Sunset Song was inspired by Californiaâ??s sunsets and the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean.

The opening phrase is staccato which is followed (at bar 11) by a sustained counter melody. Finally (at bar 19) both these effects are combined in a second melody which needs very clear dynamicplaying.Monkey Puzzle.Sustaining the sound while re-articulating the notes is important in this piece. In other words the opening should be played almost slurred. Be aware of the changing harmonies underneath the held notes in the bassoon part.Serious Song.Long but separate notes contrast with real legato. The main theme is marked tenuto so full value for each note especially ending notes. Even the quavers aren't very short at this speed. Try to make the richest sound you can like for example a fine Russian baritone.

Fernand Oubradous was a French Bassoonist composer and conductor. This Complete Method For Bassoon is one of his main recognised work and was conceived in three volumes.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Concerto for Bassoon in 1957. As with his other wind compositions Concerto for Bassoon was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composerand conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating into his compositions themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother. The Concerto for Bassoon is in three movements; 1) Andante and Allegro 2) Serenade Nocturne and 3) Final-Saltarelle. This Tomasi piece is suitable to advanced bassoonists providing an exciting alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.
