This setting of Ave Regina c''lorum (Hail, O Queen of Heaven), one of the four Marian antiphons with origins in the 4th century, is ajoyous work for upper voices, suitable for children's or women's choirs. It is full of energy and, although it is largely homophonic, the rhythmic interplay between the parts creates interesting textures which combine with Arnesens recognisable, beautiful harmonic language. The jubilant outer sections contrast with a slower, more mysterious middle section where the text speaks of the Virgin Marys beauty. A joy to both sing and listen to, this new piece will make an attractive addition to a concert or service.

For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied This partner antiphon to Bednall's Alma Redemptoris Mater is fast and joyful. This pair of antiphons compliments Howells's setting of the other Marian antiphons (Salve Regina and Regina Caeli). The central section employs a soprano solo, and the divisi in the vocal parts creates a rich texture.

A reflective setting of the one of the Marian antiphons (Hail, Queen of Heaven) by emerging composer Kerensa Briggs. A continuous, largely homophonic choral texture underpins the work, with rich harmonies and gentle dissonance, and clever seamless joining of phrases. A solo plainchant melody is incorporated over sustain chords, providing contrast in this beautiful setting of the well-known Latin text. A highly effective short motet, suitable for intermediate choirs looking to expand the horizons of their repertoire.

Michael Leighton Jones has created a brilliant sequence of six Marian works that take their lead from their plainsong counterparts. These wonderfully reflective and carefully-crafted motets take the practice of fauxbourdon in new directions, with free harmonic invention linking old to new in a beautifully warm soundworld. Motets may be performed individually on feast days or within the appropriate liturgical season, or the whole sequence can make an effective frame for a concert programme.
