Easier Piano Pieces 03-Cornelius Gurlitt was a German organist pianist and composer who wrote many instructional pieces and studies. He obviously composed at speed with considerable facility and it is not surprising that some of his output lacks individuality. Kleine Blumen however is one of his works which displays particular charm and character. No titles were originally given to the twelve pieces of Op.205 but in an Augener edition of 1936 names of flowers were used.

Szymanski was born in Warsaw on 28th March 1954. He graduated with honours from the National Higher School of Music in Warsaw where he studied composition with Wlodzimierz Kotonski (1974-78) and Tadeusz Baird (1978). In the meantime in 1976 he took part in the INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC at Innsbruck and in 1978 1980 and 1982 participated in the INTERNATIONAL SUMMER COURSES OF NEW MUSIC at Darmstadt working also with the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio in 1979-81 the Independent Studio of Electroacoustic Music in 1982-84 and the Electronic Music Studio of the Cracow Academy of Music in 1983. As a Herder scholar Szymanski continued hisstudies with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati in Vienna in 1984-85 and as a holder of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst grant in 1987-89 worked at the Electronic Studio of the Technische Universitaet.The Two Studies for solo piano written in 1992 peck and impact in slow progression - again sounding both familiar in the style of Bach yet dissected in an unhurried and surprisingly avant-garde exhibition. The second study moves to slough off the first at about 6.03. The second glitters in Mozartian gemwork.

Ludwig Schytte (1848-1909) was a Danish composer and pianist who spent most of his life living and working in Germany and Austria. Born in Jutland he studied with Franz Liszt before settling in Vienna where he taught for twenty years. He wrote around 175 works with opus numbers most of which were published in his lifetime including two operas and a Piano concerto. Most of his compositions were shorter works for the Piano and many of his pedagogical studies are still used today.25 Studies For Piano (25 Leichte Etuden Fur Pianoforte; Op. 160) was published in 1908 making it one of the composer’s last works. It has remained popular withPiano teachers and students for over a century.

Peter Racine Fricker joined the faculty at the University of California Santa Barbara in 1964 as a visiting professor and became a regular faculty member in 1970. In 1979 he was appointed Faculty Research Lecturer and remained an active professor at the University until his death in 1990. In 2008 he arranged for his estate to be used to fund an endowment for the graduate program in Composition at UCSB. The Peter Racine Fricker Fellowship for Studies in Composition provides fellowships for graduate students as well as postdoctoral students in the Composition Program of the Music Department at the University of California at Santa Barbara.Fricker's substantial output of symphonies concertos and string quartets formed an important contribution to the growth of a more progressive European outlook among British composers in the immediate postwar years. A contrapuntalist he was influenced by the examples of Bartok and Hindemtih though using serial methods as well. His vocal and choral works were few in number though the oratorio The Vision of Judgement remains highly regarded.
