Franz Liszt was barely 20 years old when he first read Dante s Divine Comedy, but it left a lasting impression on him throughout his entire life that only a truly impactful creation can have on the human soul. This is what inspired the Dante Sonata which Liszt premiered in Vienna in 1837. Stemming from this, he created a revised version entitled Apres une lecture du Dante, Fantasia quasi Sonata which appeared in 1856 within the second cycle of his Années de pelerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). In the appendix of the present edition, the work s earlier version entitled Paralipomenes a la Divina Commedia, Fantaisie symphonique is also included. It has survived in the handwritingof Liszt s secretary, Gaetanio Belloni, and it contains autograph notes by Liszts. This revised (2016) edition contains not only musical scores of excellent quality, but also a detailed foreword in English and German as well as critical notes in English.

This volume contains Liszt's earliest pieces written in a Hungarian style. The complete set of Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien [Hungarian songs] consisting of 11 items is published here for the first time in a scholarly edition. The composer began to write them resulting from his first return visit to Pest in 1839. The music of these pieces was partly re-used by Liszt at the beginning of the 1850s in his deservedly popular 15 Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Carnival at Pest was inspired by his second tour of Hungary in 1846 it was later re-worked as the 9th Hungarian Rhapsody. The present volume also contains the so far unknown very first version of the 1st HungarianRhapsody, and in addition two large fragments from the 1840s plus a number of album leaves. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This edition's contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition with the exception that the critical notes are not included.

Chapter 11 of James Joyce's Ulysses is a real treasure trove of existing and invented words and names; each word and name triggers off a whole series of associations, images, stories and sounds - particularly when the reader is a Hungarian composer who comes across the phrase “Liszt's rhapsodiesâ€. I immediately heard music by Franz Liszt in my head and visualised the two protagonists in the novel sitting on a terrace drinking coffee, chatting and dreaming, witty and endearing - which is also a perfect description of this small piano composition for four hands. The arranger of this work (a well-known Hungarian composer living in Romania) writes: +This piece has always excited my imagination, from several points of view. First of all, its name. The German title, the obstinate one, may refer to its ostinato character. This is close to Liszt's programme concept, but the French word 'obstine' is closer in meaning to stubborn. There is just a shade of difference, but to me it is important, because the latter suggests the description of a type of behaviour, the emotional state of a dancer's inner frame of mind abstracted into movements, expressed in dance movements, and this is a fascinating interpretation. The demonstration of stubborn resistance and defiance to the point of exhaustion was not a frequently occurring phenomenon with Liszt. Secondly, at the beginning of the seventies Zoltan Kocsis played the piece in Transylvania. At that time, I asked the composer, +Is the character of the continuous staccato in the left hand sharp, short, or an accompanying background like a constant shadow? Is it a weighty Brahmsian staccato, an ominous knocking? - and so on. Then there are the Bartokian false relations that keep recurring in the work, the B-E flat-G, etc. That foreshadows Debussy, creating harmonic thrills that, when I hear the work, keep my continuing interest alive for it. Finally, my immediate reason for arranging the work was of a family nature: in connection with Liszt's jubilee year, my daughter, who is a cellist, wanted a 'more energetic' piece to play at a bicentenary concert an addition to the existing slow, lyrical, or sombre works written by Liszt for the cello.+.

Aribert Reimann's idea to arrange the lieder of Franz Liszt for baritone and string quartet goes back to his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, recording some of these lieder for the German broadcasting company formerly known as Sender Freies Berlin (SFB). Since then, Reimann has continued to be fascinated by Liszt's thrilling harmony and unconventional treatment of the voice. Here, he has compiled a cycle containing seven lieder from Liszt's middle and late periods, arranged so that each song is the logical continuation of its predecessor. Liszt's fundamental harmony has been retained, but the registers have been altered to such an extent that they appear in a completely new light.

The three volumes of Années de pèlerinage (‘Pilgrim Years’) are among Liszt‘s most important compositions for piano solo. From dramatic-virtuoso to pensive-romantic music, the 29 ‘travel pieces’ represent the complete range of Liszt‘s compositional expression.
For the first time, this first volume of the trilogy, Suisse (Switzerland) is published together with the Trois Morceaux suisses, in line with the composer’s original intention to combine all his Swiss-inspired character pieces into a single volume. The musical journey is supported by the inclusion of historical illustrations of the scenes and landscapes that inspired the composer.
Edited by world-renowned Liszt expert and concert pianist Leslie Howard, the edition also contains Liszt’s original fingerings.

Via Crucis is one of the most outstanding religious masterpieces from Liszt-s late creative period, and it depicts the story of the fourteen stations of Jesus' suffering. The work was not released during the composer-s lifetime due to its unusual and daring new sonorities. Based on his own dating, Liszt completed the composing process on February 26, 1879 in Budapest. The piece was originally written as fifteen short movements for solo vocalists, choir, and organ or harmonium, and its text was compiled by Liszt's partner, Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, using biblical excerpts, two medieval Latin hymns and two German Lutheran chorales. This volume, edited by Imre Mezo, contains German, English and Hungarian prefaces, as well as critical notes in English, which reveal valuable details about the history of the work.
