This volume presents the vocal score of Vivaldi's Stabat Mater RV 621 for alto, strings and continuo, based on the critical edition by Paul Everett. Composed for the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Brescia, it was performed, for the first time, on 8 March 1712, for the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary celebration. It is considered as one of the most inspired and celebrated Vivaldian works. Ed. Critica M.Talbot - Reduction for voice and piano by Antonio Frigé-The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the score published in this catalog in 2002 (PR 1362). Although it is not possible to establish with certainty the time and the occasion for which it was composed - between the end of 1716and beginning of 1717 - the Gloria RV 589 is the best known among the works Vivaldi wrote on this subject enough to be considered the Gloria by Vivaldi.The critical edition is based on the only source available the autograph full score now kept at the National University Library of Turin Codex Giordano 32. It restores the famous Vivaldi text based on the revised criteria by the Committee of theCritical Edition. The volume includes a synthetic introduction of the historical context and a choice of the critical Notes to the musical text.

Frigé-The Dixit Dominus RV 595 shares a key and some further characteristics with the better-known setting of the same psalm RV 594 but differs from it markedly: first in being scored for an undivided ensemble (i.e. not ?in due cori?): second in belonging to Vivaldi?s first period of sacred music composition around 1715 rather than to a later period. There are stylistic parallels too with Vivaldi?s two Gloria settings RV 588 and RV 589. Three of the eleven movements making up RV 595 use borrowed material which in two instances is taken from movements by unknown composers in Vivaldi?s own collection and in one instance (heavily disguised) from a published madrigal(1705) by Antonio Lotti. The borrowings are absorbed extremely well into the fabric of the setting and do not disrupt its well-unified character. Among the high points of RV 595 are its opening pair of moments ? the first bustling and the second poignantly reflective ? and the fourth movement ?Tecum principium? where two obbligato cellos enter into dialogue with two sopranos. This Dixit Dominus preserved uniquely in Prague ranks among Vivaldi?s finest large-scale sacred vocal compositions. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for this vocal score are based on the Critical Edition by Michael Talbot published in 1993.

L'œuvre lyrique de Vivaldi reste paradoxalement méconnue : l'extraordinaire succès rencontré par un petit nombre de concertos a éclipsé tout un pan de ses compositions, notament les opéras, auxquels il consacra pourtant l'essentiel de sa carrière. De 1713 à 1741, Vivaldi donna le jour à une œuvre colossale, préservée en grande partie par la Bibliothèque de Turin : plus de 450 compositions manuscrites, en grande partie autographes. Orlando furioso, drame héroïco-magique représenté au Teatro S. Angelo de Venise à l'automne 1727, prend place à l'exacte mi-temps de la carrière lyrique de Vivaldi. Quatorze années plus tôt, au mois de mai 1713, le Prete Rosso présentait à Vicence son premier opéra connu, Ottone in villa. Quatorze années plus tard, il s'éteignait dans l'oubli après avoir vainement tenté de faire représenter à Vienne son ultime opéra, L'Oracolo in Messenia. Grâce au travail remarquable du librettiste, Grazio Braccioli, qui a su conserver de l'œuvre originale d'Arioste son essence poétique et sa dimension humaniste, Vivaldi y fait éclater le schéma conventionnel du dramma per musica, explorant les formes musicales les plus variées, bousculant la hiérarchie classique des personnages et superposant les actions dramatiques, toutes conduites avec une remarquable efficacité. Près de trois siècles après sa création, l'on demeure confondu face à l'extraordinaire richesse musicale et dramatique de l'œuvre, pièce éblouissante où se mêlent toutes les formes existantes du théâtre chanté. The surviving second and third acts of Catone in Utica, one of Metastasio's most dramatic libretti, premiered in Verona in the spring of 1737 in a setting by Vivaldi, contain some of his finest, most mature, and most original arias, and are published here for the first time. They evince a potential dramatic intensity that makes us regret all the more the loss of the first act. Only one aria of Act I can be definitely recovered from a surviving opera, but the rest has now also been successfully reconstructed by Alessandro Ciccolini, whose intimate knowledge of Vivaldi's working methods, combined with brilliant stylistic insight won universal acclaim for his work on Vivaldi's Motezuma and Ercole sul Termodoonte.
