Opera for a streaming premiere by mezzo-soprano Amanda Lynn Bottoms in February 2021, with pianist Howard Watkins. Its text, by the great Black poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, imagines just a glimmer of light dawning over a bleak, nightmarish landscape, haunted by death, which the composer explicitly connects to \'the current conditions and precarity of Black life in America in the 20th and 21st centuries\'. (Dunbar himself died in 1906 at the age of 33). This slow and melancholy setting expands the poem into a five-minute lament. This piano/vocal score includes the full text of the poem as well as a brief program note from the composer. Lyric Scenes on Fragments by Sappho. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. The Greek poetess Sappho wrote her poems, which have survived in fragmentary form, in exile in Sicily in about 600 BC. Full of natural intensity and liveliness, her verses revolve around the conditions of a human existence that is bittersweet. Her credo is: “the most beautiful thing is that which one loves”. Christian Jost has captured the mood of these words in lyrical scenes for mezzosoprano and piano. Cette anthologie est le fruit de la collaboration avec le DiDonato la mezzo-soprano Joyce qui avait exprimé le souhait d'enregistrer un CD avec mon ensemble' Il Complesso Barocco '. Il ne doit pas être simplement une autre compilation d'airs célèbres de Haendel ou Vivaldi, mais une collection de pièces de styles très différents et à des époques différentes qui sont liées par un thème commun préséance. J'ai fait remarquer à elle que il y avait beaucoup d'airs magnifiques et des scènes entières, même en solo qui avait été chanté sur la scène baroque à la fois par les chanteuses et les castrats jouer les parties de dirigeants historiques célèbres femmes et des héroïnes. En proposant le titre 'Drama Queens', elle réduit le tout à une formule contemporaine.
