Les Troyens - The Trojans: Opera in 5 Acts Berlioz composed Les Troyens towards the end of his life drawing on Virgil?s epic poem The Aeneid which he had admired since his childhood. In his Memoirs he recounts how his father a country doctor read Virgil to him and how the story of Dido?s tragic fate reduced him to tears which he tried hard to conceal. The score was finished in April 1858 but he was unable to persuade the Paris Opera to mount it (his earlier opera Benvenuto Cellini had been a failure there in 1838) and eventually he agreed to allow the last three acts to be performed under the title Les Troyens à Carthage. This took placeat the Théâtre-lyrique an enterprising but ill-equipped theatre in November 1863 and although it was much admired there were no more performances before Berlioz?s death in 1869. In the history of French music Les Troyens stand out as a grand opera that avoided the shallow glamour of Meyerbeer and Halévy but therefore paid the price of long neglect. In our own time the opera has finally come to be seen as one of the greatest operas of the 19th century. These motets offer smaller choirs and ensembles new possibilities to perform these works based on historically-informed performance practice.The Basso Continuo realisation follows the composer?s intention of using the score merely as a basis for performance but with its relatively simple realisation it allows performers to create their own version.Heinrich Schütz was a German composer and organist widely regarded as the most important German composer before Bach and one of the most important composers of the17th century. Schütz is said to have written what is considered to be the first German Opera in 1627 titled Dafne (Opitz- Shütz).

Massenet's adaptation of the Goethe novel was completed in 1892 and reinvigorated interest in in a text that was otherwise critically ignored and forgotten. It was frist performed at the Imperial Opera Vienna in February 1892.This full vocal score presents the Opera in its English translation.

Shortly before his death Giovanni Pergolesi moved to the Franciscan monastery in Pozzuoli where he composed his last works. Among these is his Stabat mater - based on the medieval Latin poem. The piece reveals the infusion into church composition of the operatic style. Pergolesi's Stabat mater features a lively declamation of the text and great melodic appeal and expressiveness. Underlying everything is the contrapuntal background that was expected in music composed for the church at this time. This is is the full score of the original version which was written for Soprano and Alto Solos and small String Ensemble.

Besides these large-scale compositions Caldara also wrote smaller Vocal works of which his ???Stabat Mater??? is the best known.This publication is based on Eusebius Mandyczewski???s edition of the ???Stabat Mater??? which has until now been the definitive edition. The notation and key signatures havebeen adapted to today???s standards. The effective instrumentation with two Trombones and Strings supports the solemn character of the work and enables smaller-scale performances.
