No. 1-4. Par ULLMANN VIKTOR. Ullman‘s seven Piano Sonatas were written between 1936 and 1944. Though rediscovered as recently as 1990, they are now available in a number of recordings. Neo-classical in approach, the piano writing and the use of polytonality places them closer to Skriabin and Prokofiev than to the works of Ullman‘s teachers Arnold Schoenberg and Alois Hába – this applies also to the Piano Concerto, written during the same period. The numerous quotes from Mozart, Wagner, Mahler, and Dukas to folksongs and tunes from operettas are particulary interesting in this context./ Répertoire / Piano

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ?Awakening Village?, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ?Bintje Monument? was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called ?bintje?. The finale, ?Journey into the Unknown? refers to the band?s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of the folksong and fragments from ?The Star-Spangled Banner?. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

In the second half of his life Moeran greatly extended his sensibilities and his musical palate to include more energetic and vigorous rhythms harmonic colours and tonalities. In the Sonata for ViolonCello and Piano the listener will find grandeur in the first movement and an intricate rondo in the finale. It is a piece by a composer who has taken an expansive step beyond his immediate surroundings and first influences.E J Moeran was a 20th century British composer of Anglo-Irish background who spent his early years in Norfolk and influences of folksong and programmatic elements can be easily heard in this composer’s main body of work. Moeran tended toward thesmaller ensembles in his compositions which gave an appropriate frame for his lyric gifts.
