The Notebook for Johann Christian Bach completes the collection of surviving instructional works from within the Bach family, following the highly praised Notebooks for Anna Magdalena and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Together, Bach?s Notebooks provide a fascinating glimpse into the domestic music academy of the Bach family home. They contain original compositions, exercises, and model examples by other composers, all collected with a view to providing a rounded musical education to family members. This first Urtext edition Notebook for Bach?s son Johann Christian has been reconstructed by renowned Bach scholar Christoph Wolff from copies from the estate of C.P.E. Bach. It includes pieces for keyboard by J.S. Bach, Johann Christian?s initial attempts at composition (minuets and polonaises), and pieces by the older brothers Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christoph Friedrich and son-in-law Johann Christoph Altnickol. Clara Schumann?s cadenzas to piano concertos by Beethoven (Opp. 37 and 58) and Mozart (K466) not only give a unique insight into her performing and composing style; they also throw light on her relationship with Johannes Brahms, whose cadenzas have considerable similarities to those of Schumann. This Urtext edition of the cadenzas includes a preface in which the renowned Canadian pianist Ludwig Sémerjian explores the interaction between Schumann and Brahms. Par HENSELT ADOLPH. The composer and pedagogue Adolph von Henselt (1814?1889) can truly be considered one of the founding fathers of the Russian School of piano playing. He counted among his pupils Nicolai Sergeyvich Zverev, the teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. Rachmaninoff considered Henselt?s Etudes the equal of those by Liszt and Chopin for their great beauty. Henselt?s music was well-known in his time, and in the repertoire of the greatest virtuosos of the 19th century, including Clara Schumann (who premiered his F minor Concerto with Mendelssohn conducting), Franz Liszt, Hans von Bülow, Vladimir de Pachmann and Alexander Scriabin. The two sets of Etudes Opp. 2 and 5 were composed just before Henselt moved permanently to Russia and each set was originally published as two books of six études. This new Edition Peters Urtext edition collects each set in its own volume, together with, in volume 1, a selection of Henselt?s Exercices préparatoires and, in volume 2, two additional etudes. It is edited by Daniel Grimwood, one of the composer?s most highly regarded interpreters, whose recording of the complete Etudes is available from Edition Peters Sounds. Following his acclaimed first recording of Adolph von Henselt's piano works for Edition Peters Sounds (EPS005), Daniel Grimwood now presents a unique recording of Henselt's complete Études coupled with the complete Préambules. Duet Cycle for Soprano, Tenor and Piano. Par DOVE JONATHAN. Man, Woman, Child by Jonathan Dove is an 18-minute song cycle with texts by Australian poet Judith Wright comprising of six songs for Soprano, Tenor and Piano. They tell the story of a man, coming home from war, who meets a woman in a wine bar: it ends with the voice of the child that emerges from this union. Commissioned to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Samling Institute for Young Artists and dedicated to all those who have shared with us their love of words and music.
