The composition was written in 2013 at a commission of flutist Rebeka Kruchio. Mate Bella, as in many of his other works, examines here the possibilities of the transition between noises made by musical instruments and musical sounds. At the climax of the piece, the flutist blows the syllables of the name RE-BE-KA into the instrument.

This volume, which marks the 300th anniversary of the king's birth, contains the first edition of four sonatas for solo flute and basso continuo composed by Frederick II, known as the Great (1712-1786), King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.
ISBN 9790004488560. 9 x 12 inches.
In the four sonatas presented here for the first time, the royal composer can lay uncontested claim to an above-average talent. The works stand out for their imaginative power, their skill and their stylistic variety. The grand rooms of Sanssouci Palace must have been filled with heartfelt Adagios and brilliant Allegros that confirmed the virtuoso flute technique of the Quantz pupil. The sonatas were recently recorded on CD (Hungaroton) by the editor who, as a performer, is a recognized expert on the music of J. J. Quantz and Frederick the Great. This volume, which marks the 300th anniversary of the king's birth, contains the first edition of four sonatas for solo flute and basso continuo composed by Frederick II, known as the Great (1712-1786), King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.

The flute concerto 'Dances with the Winds' was composed in 1974 for the Swedish flautist Gunilla von Bohr, a specialist in all members of the flute family. The ordinary flute thus alternates with a bass flute at the beginning and end of the four-movement concerto, the second movement is assigned to the shrill piccolo and the third to the sensuous alto flute. The last movement is a summary of all the musical events in the concerto. At the end the bass flute soars to the top of its register, the note D acting as the pivot to many of the symmetries in the work, against a resigned B flat minor chord on the orchestra. (Einojuhani Rautavaara) CD: Patrick Gallois (flute), Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Leif Segerstam ODE 921-2World premiere: Stockholm, May 4, 1974 Additional to the original scoring for flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute, the flute part in the piano reduction contains ossias for alto flute instead of the bass flute.

Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakovs Flight of the Bumblebee is one of those little orchestral interludes from operas, excerpts that have long since become immortal even while denying their origins; in this particular case, practically no one knows that this bravura piece comes from the opera The Tale of Czar Saltan. It did not take long before the Flight of the Bumblebee began showing up in many arrangements for solo instruments.Practically no one knows that this bravura piece comes from the opera The Tale of Czar Saltan by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. World premiere Cologne, February 26, 1984 For me, one of the most interesting aspects of composition is to draw the most varied consequences from one and the same musical idea. Thus my pieces Umbra, Mythos, Resonance and Moments Musicaux, for all their disparity, form a group of works in that they are based on a common Klanggestalt, a 34-note melodic-harmonic structure from whose formal basis the overall shape of the piece is derived by projection. I have called the method 'Gestalt composition', Thus there are 12 clearly differentiated formal characters or motives, which appear frequently in irregular sequence and are variously interconnected. The 'bell' motives play a special role here: the piano part frequently bears the instruction quasi Campane, Campanelli, Campane grandi.(York Holler, translated by Niall Hoskin)World premiere Cologne, February 26, 1984.

This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. The source is in places full of errors, and these have been tacitly corrected. Frank Nagel, Basel, June 1974.

When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? Was it in 1777 or 1778? In Salzburg or in Mannheim? And how much did Ferdinand Dejean actually pay for it: 96 gulden or the promised 200 gulden?

When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? Was it in 1777 or 1778? In Salzburg or in Mannheim? And how much did Ferdinand Dejean actually pay for it: 96 gulden or the promised 200 gulden? Henrik Wiese sheds new light into the confusion wrought by Mozart himself. Wiese, solo flutist of the Bavarian State Orchestra, has made an outstanding name for himself as soloist and editor, and is viewed in professional circles as one of the best specialists of Mozart's wind works. He has focused on the work's genesis, but especially on the music text, having consulted all known scribal copies of the work and all available copies of the first edition. The version for flute and piano also contains a facsimile of the solo part from the first edition as well as cadenzas which stem from the earliest hand-written sources or which were composed by the editor in Mozart's style. When and where did Mozart write his Flute Concerto, and for whom? Julius Rietz succeeded Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy as conductor in Dusseldorf in 1835, and was also stylistically indebted to Mendelssohn as a composer as well. Rietz began working in Leipzig in 1847, heading not only the Singakademie there, but also the Gewandhaus concerts beginning in 1848. He also taught composition at the Leipzig Conservatory. In 1860 Rietz moved to Dresden, where he was active as court Kapellmeister and later also assumed the directorship of the Conservatory. One finds works of all genres in his oeuvre. The Sonata in G minor op. 42 for flute and piano was originally published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1876.

(Pascal Gresset, Tempo flute).
