This inaugural edition of the Cello Series offers a sound and progressive collection of Repertoire, Recordings, Etudes, Technique, and Orchestral Excerpts for the aspiring cellist. With an expansive representation of musical styles from all eras, this series addresses the need for a single collection of quality educational materials to foster musical development and instill appreciation of the richness and diversity of music written for cello. Supporting a balanced course of study, this series organizes repertoire into nine volumes from the Preparatory Level through Level 8. Each level offers music from a range of styles and compositional eras, including standard literature, new arrangements of familiar tunes, and music written for cellists, by cellists. These selections provide the flexibility to choose pedagogically appropriate material suited to each individual, and to motivate students to fully develop their musicianship and technique.Preparatory Level:Etude in C Major - Schroeder, CarlStroll Along - Anonymous arr. This volume from the popular Cellissimo series contains 30 entertaining recital pieces, mostly from the Romantic period. In additionto three original serenades by Jacques Offenbach, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and the French composer Mel Bonis, the volume contains beautiful character pieces, mostly one-movement forms such as berceuse, elegy, humoresque, meditation, melody, nocturne, romance, tarantella, valse de concert and much more . Expressive lyrical pieces are represented as well as cheerful and virtuoso works. In addition to original works, there are numerous arrangements of popular works, including Schumann's Traumerei, Grieg's Anitras Tanz, Fauré's Après un rêve, Elgar's Salut d'amour or Rachmaninoff's Vocalise - all pieces that are well suited as concert and encore pieces . The volume also contains rarities and new discoveries, including original works by cello virtuosos such as Dotzauer, Offenbach, Goltermann, van Goens and Trowell, as well as works by composers Mel Bonis, Juliette Dantin, Ethel Harraden and Claudine Smidt. The level of difficulty is demanding and is aimed at advanced cellists. Many pieces use the 5th-7th position, others have passages in a simple thumb position, sometimes also with high harmonics. They are therefore very good practice examples for advanced users who want to apply sophisticated techniques to beautiful examples of literature. Last but not least, the requirements for expression and design offer plenty of room for cellist and musical development.

Featured on the Bridge Records CD Music of David Felder, as recorded by the Arditti String Quartet. Felder's Third Face was given its first performance by the Arditti, at the 1988 Buffalo new music festival. I was struck by it then; after further hearings of it I admire it even more. It is lucid, but with a controlled wildness in its making. Written for virtuosi, it challenges them by presenting its fierce, fertile ideas with almost reckless rhythmic and dynamic exuberance. (Andrew Porter, The New Yorker) For advanced performers. Duration: 11'.

Another commissioned work has Ewazen borrowing from his own The Eternal Dance of Life for a special new gift for cello and piano. The composer says it best: As a former cellist in my youth, have always loved the instrument, and have enjoyed writing for it. The work contains swirling arpeggiated gestures, a lilting compound meter and a real sense of expressivity, allowing the cello to sing with soaring lines and genuine lyricism. For advanced performers.

Spanish composer Leonardo Balada dresses Bach's melodies in musical finery that examines thematic variation, shifting tonal centers, sharply contrasting timbres, and instrumental balance. Described as 'a work in continual nervous motion, full of contrasting, interlocking speeds and rhythm' by the New York Times this advanced work for Cello and Piano is an exploration of both Bach and of the two instruments. Leonardo Balada serves as University Professor of Composition at Carnegie Mellon University.

Schickele's new piano quartet was written for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival (northwest of Seattle), and would have been his very first piano quartet - except that he had forgotten an earlier, unfinished composition. Happily, an unrelated search uncovered the earlier quartet, and Schickele set about cutting, reworking, and re-composing to create Music for Orcas Island. The quartet consists of four complementary movements: I. Spring Sunshine; II. Rainy, with Fog; III. Lively; and IV. Low-lying Clouds. For intermediate to advanced performers. Duration: 13'.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge, James Matheson's SPIN is a three-movement study in various meanings of the word spin. I. Gyre has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena. II. Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords in which snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. Similar to the first movement, III. Spiral explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales.SPIN was composed in early 1998. Each of the work’s three movements assumes the task of exploring a different meaning of the title. The first movement, Gyre (as in gyroscope), has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena – spinning and bouncing off the walls (like a spinning penny, which bounces off of an object unpredictably and with somewhat explosive force). The primary musical idea consists of high harmonics in the violins set against a rocking pulse in the lower strings. This basic texture is explored in various guises as the movement progresses.Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords. Snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. The music intensifies, leading to an expected climax (or anti-climax) of pizzicatos, before returning to the opening material and winding gently to a close.Like Gyre, the third movement, Spiral, explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales. The formal idea of this movement, however, has the character of a spiral, with its tendency toward implosion.SPIN was written for violinist Baird Dodge.

Dessau's String Quartet movement was written while he was also working on Brecht's opera Puntila. After Brecht's death in 1956 Dessau found himself looking for a new direction. On the one hand he was still working on music begun in collaboration with the poet, while on the other hand Dessau was trying to work towards a socially oriented musical aesthetic, which led him to compose songs for political purposes. Even this Quartet movement does not owe its inspiration purely to an artistic vision. In spite of its technical demands, the piece is intended to be comprehensible and could even be played by an amateur ensemble in its cleverly reduced form. Only discovered after the composer's death, the Movement for String Quartet is published for the first time in this edition.

Having performed Garrop's String Quartet No. 2: Demons and Angels with much success, it is only natural that the Biava Quartet would handle the premiere of String Quartet No.3: Gaia. In an email interview with Pittsburgh New Music Net, Biava violist Mary Persin says, in part, We received many very enthusiastic responses from audience members who were struck by the interesting form, as well as the sonorities created by using a good deal of dissonance as well as harmonics. Watch for a recording by the Biava Quartet to be made available soon. For advanced performers. Duration: 32' 30.
