Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. The 4 Greek Songs were composed during the late fifties. The first and third movements capture the loose vocal style of the cantilena which is characteristic for the mediterranean region. The second and fourth movements are based on original dances which are typical for the modal nature of Greek music.

Summer Solstice is a 19-minute concerto in three movements, composed for solo clarinet with a colorfully-textured string orchestra. The piano reduction is comfortably voiced for recital use. Dorff's joy in writing for his own instrument is readily heard in the warm cantabile writing and gracefully idiomatic passagework. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of Mozart's concerto and the rhythmic grit of Copland's, Dorff's concerto is a true hybrid of jazz-inspired language with classical form and counterpoint. The Philadelphia Inquirer has written, Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. It has an invariably American sound. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. Full score is also available for sale as study score (416-41604) or large score (416-41604L)._____________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Summer Solstice (Concerto for Clarinet and Strings)The Philadelphia Inquirer has written “Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. Verdiana is a musical tribute to Giuseppe Verdi. It takes some of his most famous melodies and reimagines them in styles of Samba, Bossa Nova and Tango to produce a virtuosic showpiece for clarinet and orchestra. The work is structured in three movements. The titles of the movements do not only indicate from which operas the main melodies were taken, they also function as a hint to the styles in which the movements are written. The first movement, titled Il Sambatore, is a Samba based primarily on the melodic material from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The second one, Un Bossa in Maschera, is a slow Bossa Nova and consists of an aria from Un Ballo in Maschera. The third and the most virtuosic movement is called Don Tangoletto and derives most of its material from Don Carlos and Rigoletto. The piece exists in 4 versions: Solo clarinet with either full orchestra, string orchestra, string quartet or piano. This publication also includes an alto sax part that can be used instead of a clarinet. An Hommage to Giuseppe Verdi.
