Ego Sum Panis Vivus was inspired by theantiphon to the Benedictus at Lauds on the feast of Corpus Christi. It makes a perfect anthem for any Eucharist service or Mass. It is scored for SATB choir with Piano reduction for rehearsal purposes.

This sacred work is a rousing and expansive mass written by English Elizabethan musician William Byrd. This is the definitive score for this masterpiece of Tudor polyphony has been edited by Henry Washington with reference tothe original part-books in the British Museum. This has been set for a mixed choir of Soprano Alto Tenor and Bass.

William Byrd offers a beautiful setting for the motet “O Gloriosa Domina.” James Marvin has transposed the original up a 4th gaining great clarity for the treble voice. A highly expressive setting of a colorful andpoignant text extolling the virtues of the Virgin Mary the motet is divided into four brief sections each devoted to a verse of the Lauds Hymn. The final “Amen” is particularly striking. An enduring text that ishighly engaging to sing this lovely three-part work is a must for treble choirs.

Thomas Morley (c.1557-1602) was an Elizabethan composer organist and printer and one of the foremost members of the English musical renaissance. He studied under William Byrd and later became organist at St Pauls Cathedral. He almost certainly knew and was associated with William Shakespeare and is one of the few contemporary composers whose settings of Shakespeare’s verse have survived. He is best remembered for his madrigals such as Now Is The Month Of Maying but he also wrote many sacred works undoubtedly for use at St Paul’s.Nolo Mortem Peccatoris is a Latin motet for SATB choir. A Piano reduction is provided foraccompaniment if required.

Chanteur, compositeur, théoricien de la musique, Thomas Ravenscroft (vers 1590-1635) est passé à la postérité comme collecteur et premier éditeur de chansons populaires et de canons anglais (rounds ou catches).
Conçus pour être chantés à l'unisson dans des tessitures variées, les canons étaient également appréciés sur des instruments tels que flûte à bec ou violes.
Les canons s'appuient sur des textes variés : comptines, cris de rue, chansons de tavernes, jeux de solmisation, ballades traditionnelles, mais aussi textes sacrés en latin et en anglais.

Certaines pièces ont été transposées pour des raisons instrumentales en relation avec la progression pédagogique.


De la Renaissance anglaise, on connaît généralement les noms de compositeurs tels que William Byrd et John Dowland, dont les oeuvres sont encore souvent perçues comme difficiles d'accès par le musicien d'aujourd'hui, apprenti, amateur ou non-spécialiste. La collection de canons éditée par Thomas Ravenscroft au début du XVIIème siècle, des simples chansons enfantines aux pièces plus sophistiquées, constitue une formidable introduction, attrayante et variée, à cet univers.
Les musiciens et les professeurs à la recherche de répertoire pour jouer en ensembles de divers niveaux trouveront ici leur bonheur. De trois à onze parties, ces canons offrent de multiples possibilités d'exécution. Ils développent l'écoute collective, la mémoire et la concentration dans un processus ludique.

Daniel Massard m'a fait l'amitié de me demander d'écrire quelques mots en exergue de ce recueil bienvenu.
Le texte de présentation de Véronique Lafargue est parfaitement exhaustif tant en ce qui concerne Thomas Ravenscroft, que l'utilisation des textes choisis, proposée aux musiciens.
Les contrepoints écrits ou rassemblés par ce compositeur et collecteur nous offrent une passionnante promenade entre Renaissance et Baroquie plus de 50 ans avant la naissance du cantor !
Il me serait difficile de ne pas applaudir cette initiative qui offre aux musiciens un matériau riche et authentique, après avoir moi-même proposé en 1973 que le solfège devienne formation musicale, précisément pour justifier ce qui aujourd'hui, apparaît tellement clair :... de préférence aux manuels didactiques, souvent bien pauvres, choisissons sans hésitation le répertoire musical pour s'initier à la musique de façon aussi évidente que l'on choisit sa littérature pour l'apprentissage d'une langue.

Angelus ad Virginem describes the Annunciation the biblical event in which the Angel Gabriel communicated with Mary about the forthcoming birth of Jesus. The tranquil music is intended to depict the angelic voice of Gabriel and the voice of Mary through its chant-like nature and exotic shifting harmonies. Douglas Mason began his musical training as a chorister in Gloucester Cathedral Choir under John Sanders. He subsequently read music at Durham University and went on to train as a music teacher at Leeds University also singing professionally as a lay clerk in the Choir of Leeds Parish Church at this time.As a composer Douglas focuses on choral works in particular and he has also written and arranged music for schools. As a performer Douglas has sung on numerous television and radio broadcasts and appeared on recordings for several labels including Abbey Priory and ASC records. For several years he was also a member of the William Byrd Singers directed by Stephen Wilkinson.
