Par CHARPENTIER MARC-ANTOINE. Marc-Antoine Charpentier fut un des plus féconds et plus remarquables musiciens de la fin du XVIIe siècle. Il a laissé une oeuvre considérable de musique religieuse. Il se distingue par la personnalité qu'il affirme dans les différentes formes de ses compositions. Il a écrit de nombreux psaumes, des motets pour les principales fêtes liturgiques, des leçons de Ténèbres, des Oratorios et Histoires Sacrées. La plus grande partie de ces oeuvres sont encore manuscrites et constituent le précieux fond des MELANGES, conservé à la Bibliothèque Nationale dont est extraite la Messe de Minuit pour Noël, à 4 voix, ftûtes et violons. The special appeal of this “Mass for the Midnight Service on Christmas Eve” lies in its use of no fewer than ten traditional French carols while impressively revealing Charpentier’s mastery of the concertante style.The eight solo vocalists (SSAATTBB) can easily be taken from the chorus. They are divided into three groups – one group of two sopranos and two groups each comprising alto tenor and bass – which interact with the chorusand instruments.
